Buying a car insurance policy is mandatory for every four wheeler in India. As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every car in India must be covered with at least a third party insurance cover to legally ply on the Indian roads. If a person is found driving an uninsured car, he/she will be penalized under the motor laws of India.
Until now, a car owner could buy insurance for his/her vehicle online or through an insurance agent or by visiting the branch of a motor insurance company. But from 1st July 2021, car owners will be able to buy a car insurance policy from their postman.
India Post by Indian Post Payment Bank (IPPB) will now sell car insurance plans to their customers. People who want to buy insurance for their car can visit their nearest post office or schedule a postman’s visit at their home to avail the services. The customers will be offered Tata AIG General Insurance Company and Tata AIG General Insurance Company.

People who have an account with the Indian Post Payment Bank will be able to purchase car insurance from India Post. The customer must present the registration certificate of his/her car along with the previous car insurance policy, if any, to the postman to buy the policy.
In case a person does not have an IPPB account, they can get their account opened within a few minutes by providing their mobile number and Aadhaar Card details.
