It has 20 regional offices, where various transport related issues like issuance of a driving license, renewal of registration, rules and regulations for road safety, etc. under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 are dealt. As per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, every engine vehicle in India must be registered in the view of the RTO and state. After registration of the vehicle, an RC is given to the vehicle's owner. There are two types of registrations of the vehicle available in Uttar Pradesh:
Temporary Registration - This type of vehicle registration is most of the times is done by the dealer at the time of buying. It is offered for a limited period of time and the owner is required to get the permanent registration within this time frame.
Permanent Registration - No vehicle with an engine is allowed to run on the Indian roads without a registration number. In Uttar Pradesh, the owner of the vehicle has to apply for the permanent registration of the vehicle within 7 days of purchase to the Registration Authority.
