Well, if you love travelling by train, then there’s something that can excite you.

In ‘Diwali Bonanza’ ahead of the gala extravaganza, travel insurance plan can be availed by the rail passengers at just 1 Paisa.

This is an optional travel insurance plan for train travellers and this will be available at token price of only one paisa rather than 92 paisa.

Inspired by the growing number of the rail travellers selecting this scheme since the inception on September 1, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) said that they have reduced the amount of premium to one paisa, albeit for now.

The reduced cost of premiums will be valid for all the tickets booked until October 31, 2016 under this plan offered by the IRCTC.

Mr. A K Manocha, Managing Director and the Chairman of IRCTC said, “We have determined the reduced cost for the discretionary travel insurance plan with the immediate effect. It is one of the special promotional measures and intends to smoothen the process for rail travellers so that they can avail this scheme.” He further added, “It’s a Diwali Bonanza for the Indian Railway patrons.”

Mr. Manocha added that more 1,20,87,625 rail passengers have already opted for this scheme till date. This scheme, which began in September, has been accepted by more than one Crore train travellers. He added, “The optional travel insurance plan is passenger-friendly measure, and the way it is being chosen by the train travellers is a proof that it is getting famous.”

This scheme was announced in the Rail Budget 2016-17. The optional train travel insurance permits the passengers to avail the insurance cover up to Rs. 10 Lakh while booking the ticket on the portal of IRCTC.

The scheme intends to offer a compensation of Rs. 10 Lakh to its passengers and their loved ones in case of the demise of the policyholder or permanent total disability. A cover of Rs. 7.5 Lakh is offered for permanent partial disability, for hospitalisation a cover up to Rs. 2 Lakh is offered. Moreover, the scheme offers Rs. 10,000 for the transportation of the mortals’ remains in case of the demise or injury caused due to train accident or any other indecent incidents such as dacoity, arson or shoot-out, terrorist attack, short termination, Vikalp trains and diverted routes.

The passengers can avail this scheme while booking e-ticket in the IRCTC portal; this excludes the sub-urb trains regardless of the ticket class. The insurance coverage is uniform for all the classes. You can click on the checkbox to avail the scheme while booking e-ticket. The amount of premium is added to the fare of the ticket automatically. You will receive a message to complete the nomination details after the booking and premium payment of the ticket.

This scheme is put into practice by the IRCT in association with Shriram General Insurance and Royal Sundaram General Insurance.
