How do pre-existing conditions affect health insurance coverage?

Policybazaar Team

Hello Yadav. Thanks for reaching out. Pre-existing conditions can significantly impact your health insurance coverage. A pre-existing condition is a health condition that existed before you bought your health insurance policy. Examples of pre-existing conditions include asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

When you apply for health insurance coverage, the insurance company will ask about your medical history, including any pre-existing conditions. If you have a pre-existing condition, the insurance company may:

  • Offer coverage with a higher premium: The insurance company may offer you a policy with a higher premium to cover the increased risk associated with your pre-existing condition.
  • Limit coverage for the pre-existing condition: The insurance company may exclude coverage for the pre-existing condition or limit the scope by applying a waiting period before covering the pre-existing condition.
  • Deny coverage: In some cases, the insurance company may deny coverage altogether if you have a pre-existing condition that is considered too risky to insure.

It is essential to disclose any pre-existing conditions when applying for health insurance coverage, as failing to do so could result in the denial of claims later on. Additionally, if you have a pre-existing condition, it is recommended that you compare health insurance plans and choose a policy that offers adequate coverage for your medical needs.
