Wants to understand about top up and super top up
Hi Samir, both top-up and super top-up plans provide additional cover beyond a threshold limit/ deductible. However, a top-up plan will become active only when in a single hospitalization the threshold limit of your top-up plan has been crossed. Whereas, a super top-up will become active for all subsequent hospitalizations in a year as soon as your threshold limit has been crossed either in a single hospitalization or cumulatively in multiple hospitalizations.
Let's take an example. Assume you have both a super top-up plan and a basic top-up plan with a maximum sum insured of Rs. 5 lac, with a deductible of Rs. 3 lac.
Now, say, two claims arise in a year; the first one of Rs. 1.5 lac and the second one of Rs. 2.5 lac. The basic top-up plan will not become active in any of those hospitalizations as in both cases your health claim did not exceed the deductible/ threshold limit of Rs. 3 lac individually. However, super top-up plan will become active during the second hospitalization as the total admissable claim (Rs. 1.5 + Rs. 2.5 = Rs. 4 lac) has exceeded the deductable limit of Rs. 3 lac, hence, you get Rs. 1 lac from the insurer against the second claim. The first Rs. 3 lac may be paid out from your basic health insurance policy assuming you have a base policy with a cover of Rs. 3 lac.
Usually, one should take a super top-up plan if they suffer from any chronic diseases or expect multiple hospitalizations in a year. If not, a basic top-up plan should suffice, however, if the price differential is not high, you might as well go for a super top-up.
