The alleged mastermind behind the cyber fraud, identified as Rahul Dogra, with an educational background up to Class 12 and proficiency in web development, was operating a call center in Agra where he employed several individuals.
Cyber Detection Officer Vikas Shinde led the police team that uncovered compelling technical evidence linking Dogra to the cybercrime. Presently, four cases have been registered against the 32-year-old culprit under the provisions of the Information Technology Act.
According to the police, the accused engaged in impersonation and the creation of counterfeit websites, primarily targeting popular restaurants and eateries. Employing coding techniques and search engine optimization tactics, Dogra manipulated search results, ensuring that his counterfeit websites ranked higher than the genuine ones when users conducted online searches.
Once an unwitting visitor accessed the fake website and reached out via the provided contact number, the fraudulent website operators would initiate contact via WhatsApp, subsequently sending a QR code for payment purposes.
Exploiting this scheme, they repeatedly claimed that payments had not been received, deceiving customers into making multiple payments. Dogra operated multiple counterfeit websites, all of which have since been shut down by law enforcement authorities. Dogra now faces charges including cheating, forgery, criminal breach of trust, impersonation, and offenses under various sections of the Information Technology Act.
In addition to Dogra's arrest, another suspect, identified as Rakesh Jatav (22), was apprehended in Mathura. Additionally, separate cases related to the cyber fraud operation have been identified and pursued in Delhi and Gwalior.
