Pune-Based Engineering Supplies Firm Loses Over 22 Lakh in Cyber Scam
Pune City police uncovered a suspected 'man-in-the-middle' cyber attack that cost a Pune-based engineering supplies firm more than 24,000 Euros (approximately Rs 22 lakh). Cybercriminals exploited a minor difference in the email address of a French company to trick the Pune firm into depositing funds into a fraudulent Portuguese bank. The cybercrime took place between January and March this year, with the firm transferring the amount following a deceptive email notifying a change in the bank account details. The scam was revealed when the French company reported non-receipt of payment. Authorities advise businesses to strengthen cybersecurity measures, including regular email security reviews and direct confirmation of account changes, to prevent such attacks
