Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) Interest Rate
For the July-September 2026 quarter, SCSS pays 8.20% per annum. The Ministry of Finance reviews rates on all small savings schemes every quarter (April, July, October, and January), using a formula linked to government bond yields. Note that the rate at which an account was opened will not change during its five-year tenure, and future increases or decreases in the rate will not apply to the existing accounts.

Senior Citizen Savings Scheme Eligibility
SCSS eligibility extends beyond the standard 60-year age requirement in certain retirement, defence, joint-account, and spouse-related conditions:
- Retirees Aged 55–60: Individuals who have retired through voluntary retirement, special voluntary retirement, or superannuation can open an SCSS account within three months of receiving their retirement benefits, subject to the applicable conditions.
- Retired Defence Personnel: Retired personnel of the Defence Services, excluding civilian defence employees, can open an account from the age of 50 years, subject to fulfilment of the specified conditions. Defence personnel can also use the SCSS as one of the reliable options for late-stage retirement planning.
- Joint Account Eligibility: In a joint account, the age of the first account holder determines eligibility. There is no age limit for the second applicant.
- Accounts for Spouses: Spouses may open separate or joint accounts with each other where the maximum amount of each account is ₹30 lakh, as long as the spouses meet the eligibility requirements separately.
- Nominee Benefits: The spouse can continue the account on the same terms and conditions if it is a joint account and where the spouse is the sole nominee and meets the SCSS eligibility conditions on the date of the death of the account holder.

Senior Citizen Savings Scheme Tax Benefits
SCSS is taxable with some implications on the initial deposit, interest earnings, taxable savings, and applicable deductions. The essential tax provisions are the following:
- Section 123 (Section 80C earlier) Deduction: Under Section 123 (previously Section 80C) deduction, SCSS deposits are eligible for a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh, but only in the old regime. The deduction is not available in the new tax regime.
- Taxability of Interest: The interest of SCSS is subject to tax at the applicable slab rate of the account holder and it is reported under other sources of income.
- Section 80TTB Deduction: Under the old tax regime, resident senior citizens are allowed to deduct up to ₹50,000 per annum of the interest earned on eligible bank and post office deposits (including SCSS).
- TDS Threshold: ₹1,00,000 for resident senior citizens on specified interest payments, subject to applicable provisions.
- Form 121: Eligible taxpayers may submit Form 121 where their tax liability on estimated total income for the relevant tax year is nil. This allows the payer to not deduct TDS on specified payments. The income remains taxable even when TDS is not deducted.
Finding Returns Using SCSS Calculator
SCSS interest is calculated on the deposit amount and paid quarterly, rather than being added to the principal for quarterly compounding. The SCSS Calculator uses the formula below for calculating the interest payable.
Quarterly Interest = (Deposit × Annual Interest Rate) ÷ 4
At the current 8.20% rate:
- ₹15 lakh deposit: Offers an annual interest of ₹30,750 every quarter, or ₹123,000 every year.
- ₹30 lakh deposit: Attract interest of ₹61,500 per quarter, or ₹2,46,000 per annum.
- ₹60 lakh combined deposit: Two investors can earn ₹61,500 each quarter, or ₹1,23,000 together each quarter when they deposit ₹30 lakh each. This is equivalent to ₹4,92,000 combined annual interest.
These values are based on the assumption that the deposit is invested throughout the five years tenure with the applicable interest rate of 8.20% p.a. It reflects gross interest earnings only and the interest on which TDS and income tax is due are not included.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the current SCSS interest rate?
SCSS pays 8.20% per annum for the July-September 2026 quarter, paid out quarterly. The Ministry of Finance reviews the interest rates on small savings schemes every quarter. The rate may be revised or retained for the next quarter. These are charged when you open the account, is kept stable throughout the five-year term.
-
Who is eligible to open an SCSS account?
Anyone aged 60 or above, resident retirees aged 55 to 60 who took voluntary retirement or superannuation, and retired defence personnel aged 50 and above. The account must generally be opened within three months of receiving retirement benefits, while eligible defence personnel aged 50 and above can open an account subject to the applicable scheme conditions.
-
What is the maximum amount I can invest in SCSS?
₹30 lakh per person, in all SCSS accounts. A married couple can invest up to ₹60 lakh together, in two separate accounts.
-
Is SCSS better than a bank fixed deposit?
SCSS now has a higher rate than most bank FDs and has a sovereign guarantee, instead of the ₹5 lakh DICGC insurance cap on bank deposits. The five-year lock-in, a ₹30 lakh limit and an age-based eligibility rule are the most important that FDs don’t have.
-
Can I withdraw from SCSS before it matures?
Yes. The account can be closed prematurely before maturity, subject to the applicable deductions. If closed before one year, the interest paid on the deposit is recovered. If closed after one year but before two years, 1.5% of the deposit is deducted, while 1% is deducted if closed after two years but before maturity.
-
Can I extend my SCSS account after 5 years?
Yes. SCSS can be extended in three-year blocks, any number of times, by submitting Form 4 within one year of each maturity date. The account can be extended even if the interest rate applicable at the time of extension is different from the original rate.
-
Can NRIs open an SCSS account?
No. SCSS is restricted to resident Indians. NRIs cannot open an account.
-
Where can I open an SCSS account?
At any post office or at one of the authorised banks, including SBI and most public sector banks, plus ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank at select branches. The rate and rules are identical everywhere.
