India’s second-largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Bajaj Auto Limited ranks alongside some of the largest manufacturers of motorbikes in the world. The Pune based two-wheeler manufacturer has long been known for manufacturing innovative and stylish motorbikes and scooters. But in a recent development, Bajaj Auto Limited caught the eye of the world with its steep decline in performance figures for March 2017.

The automobile leader recently revealed that it was able to sell 2.44 Lakh two-wheelers in March 2017, which is 8 per cent less than what it sold during the same period last year. Bajaj Auto sold 2.64 Lakh two-wheelers during March 2016.

Sources in the online media reveal that the company exported as many as 92,786 two-wheeler units in March 2017 as against 87,461 units it exported in March 2016, achieving an overall increase of 6 per cent.

Segmental Performance

  • Bike sales decreased by 14 per cent.
  • Commercial vehicle sales decreased by 35 per cent.
  • Export of two-wheelers increased by 6 per cent.
  • Export of commercial vehicles decreased by 28 per cent.

Due to the decline in the overall sales of the two-wheeler segment, the equity shares of Bajaj Auto also fell by 0.5 per cent in March 2017.

Impact of BS-IV Emission Norms

Due to the BS-IV emission norms stipulated by the authorities, almost all two-wheeler manufacturers were later forced to offer huge discounts to be able to clear their stocks of two-wheelers.

Like all other two-wheeler manufacturers, Bajaj Auto Limited too offered heavy discounts on its two-wheeler products to delight its customers and clear off its stocks. The company offered as high as Rs.12,000 discounts on its flagship bikes and scooters.
