near Chennai in May 1998, launching the iconic Hyundai Santro in September of the same year. By March 1999, HMIL had already secured its position as India’s second-largest auto manufacturer. On May 27, 1998, the pilot production of the Hyundai Santro began at the Irungattukottai manufacturing plant near Chennai within 17 months of its groundbreaking. HMIL's manufacturing plant in India manufactures the entire range of all Hyundai car models. HMIL is a critical part of HMC's global export hub, with cars being exported to Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and other countries in the Middle East and Africa.
