Overview of Post Office Senior Citizen Savings Scheme
The India Post Senior Citizen Savings Scheme allows eligible retired individuals to deposit up to ₹30 lakh and draw interest every quarter. The scheme was introduced in 2004 and now governed by the Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme Rules, 2019. Deposits start at ₹1,000 and must be made in multiples of ₹1,000. The Ministry of Finance notified the interest rate and reviews it quarterly.
The Post Office SCSS interest rate applicable on the deposit date stays locked for a five year term even if the rate is revised later. The interest is paid quarterly instead of being accumulated until maturity.

FAQs
-
Can NRIs open a Post Office SCSS account?
No. The scheme is restricted to resident Indians. An account holder who becomes an NRI during the tenure must notify the post office, as the scheme rules set out how such accounts are treated.
-
Is the ₹30 lakh limit per account or per depositor?
Per person. The ceiling applies across all SCSS accounts an individual holds, whether at a post office or a bank. A married couple can hold ₹30 lakh each in separate accounts, taking the household total to ₹60 lakh.
-
When is interest credited on a Post Office SCSS account?
Quarterly. The first credit after opening covers a partial quarter, running from the deposit date to the quarter end, so it is smaller than later payouts.
-
Does the interest rate change after the account is opened?
No. The rate applicable on the date of deposit stays fixed for the full five-year term. Quarterly revisions notified by the Ministry of Finance apply only to accounts opened in that quarter.
-
Can the account be transferred from a post office to a bank?
Yes. An SCSS account can be transferred between a
post office and an authorised bank, and between branches anywhere in India. The transfer does not affect the rate locked at opening.
-
How many times can the account be extended?
As many times as the depositor wishes, in 3-year blocks, applying on Form-4 within one year of maturity or of the end of each block.
-
Can I take a loan against my Post Office SCSS deposit?
No. The deposit cannot be pledged as security. This differs from a post office time deposit, where a pledge facility is generally available. Accessing funds early requires premature closure, which is subject to the applicable conditions and penalty.
