Tax Benefits of the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme

Under the old tax regime, senior citizens investing in the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh per year under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act (ITA), 1961 (or Section 123 of the ITA 2025). While quarterly interest is fully taxable, resident senior citizens can deduct up to ₹50,000 per year from total deposit interest under Section 80TTB (Section 153 under the 2025 Act) to lower their tax liability.

SCSS Tax Deduction Limits, TDS Rules, and Form 15H Benefits

    1. Tax Saving on Deposit Amount:

Under the old tax regime, senior citizens can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh per financial year on the money invested in SCSS under Section 80C of the 1961 Act (Section 123 of the 2025 Act).

    2. Tax Exemption on Interest:

Resident senior citizens can deduct up to ₹50,000 per year on total deposit interest earned across SCSS and fixed deposits under Section 80TTB of the 1961 Act (Section 153 of the 2025 Act).

    3. Regime Choice Matters:

Neither the ₹1.5 lakh investment deduction nor the ₹50,000 interest deduction is available if you choose the new tax regime.

    4. TDS Threshold Limit:

Banks and post offices deduct 10% TDS on quarterly interest payouts only if your total annual deposit interest from that institution crosses ₹1,00,000 (or 20% if no PAN is provided).

    5. Avoiding TDS with Form 15H:

If your estimated tax on total income for the year is nil, you can submit Form 121 at the start of the financial year to completely stop automatic TDS deductions.

  • Closure before 1 year: All interest paid will be recovered from the principal deposit amount.

Account Maturity and Extension Guidelines

  • 5-Year Initial Tenure: The basic account tenure completes after 5 years from the date of account opening.
  • Extension in 3-Year Blocks: You can extend your SCSS account for additional 3-year block periods by submitting an application within 1 year of maturity.
  • No Extra 80C Claim on Extension: Extending an existing account does not qualify for a fresh Section 80C tax deduction. A new 80C claim is only available when you open a fresh SCSS account with new capital.

Conclusion

Under the Old Tax Regime, SCSS offers Section 80C deductions up to ₹1.5 lakh on principal deposits and Section 80TTB deductions up to ₹50,000 on interest. Interest is taxable, with 10% TDS applied only if annual institution-wise interest exceeds ₹1,00,000 (avoidable via Form 15H if overall tax is zero). These tax benefits are not present in the New Tax Regime. Additionally, 3-year extensions do not yield fresh 80C claims, and early withdrawals carry penalties ranging from full interest forfeiture (under 1 year) to 1.5% (1–2 years) or 1% (2–5 years).

FAQs

  • Q. Can a senior citizen claim 80TTB in the new tax regime?

No, a senior citizen cannot claim Section 80TTB under the new tax regime.
  • Q. Which is better: SCSS or FD for a senior citizen?

Choosing between SCSS and a Bank Fixed Deposit comes down to guaranteed return versus accessibility. The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) offers a government-backed 8.2% annual return, tax savings under Section 80C (Old Regime), and fixed quarterly income, but locks your money in for 5 years. Bank FDs, while typically offering slightly lower senior citizens FD rates, provide flexible tenure choices, varied interest payout options, and easier liquidity during financial emergencies.
  • Q. What happens to SCSS after 5 years?

    Upon SCSS maturity after 5 years, it offers three options to the subscriber;
    • Full Withdrawal: Close the account to receive your entire principal plus the final quarter's interest.
    • Multiple 3-Year Extensions: Submit Form 4 within 1 year of maturity to extend the account in 3-year blocks repeatedly at the prevailing interest rate.
    • Inaction (Auto-Closure): If left unextended after 1 year, the funds downgrade to earning standard savings account interest instead of the high SCSS rate.
  • Q. Is interest income generated from SCSS fully taxable?

Yes, the interest income generated from SCSS is fully taxable.
  • Q. Is there any exemption for senior citizens in the new tax regime?

While the basic tax rates and slab limits are identical across all age groups under the new tax regime, senior citizens still enjoy two main benefits:

    • Standard Deduction on Pension: Senior citizens receiving a regular salary or pension get a flat ₹75,000 standard deduction under the new tax regime. Family pensioners can also claim a deduction of up to ₹25,000.
    • Exemption from Advance Tax: Resident senior citizens (aged 60+) without business or professional income are completely exempt from paying quarterly advance tax, regardless of the regime chosen.
