Understanding the Validity of Bike Insurance Policy

Every bike insurance policy has an expiry date and usually has a one-year validity. As a policyholder, you must renew your bike insurance policy before the expiry date.

New bike owners must buy a third-party bike insurance policy for 5 years and 1 year of own-damage cover. Although there are bike insurance policies with 1 to 3 years of tenure, you can purchase according to your requirements. It is advised that the policy be renewed on time.

Timely renewal of bike insurance policy helps in:

— Avoiding legal fines
— Keeping claim benefits intact
— Preventing loss of No Claim Bonus (NCB)

Why is Timely Bike Insurance Renewal Important?

The insurance company will not cover you if you do not renew your policy before expiration. There are several complications if you do not renew your policy on time, such as:

  1. Leads to Penalty

Third-party bike insurance is mandatory, and if the policy expires and you do not renew it on time, it violates motor vehicle law. If the traffic police catch you and you cannot show them the insurance policy when asked, they can issue a challan against you.

The penalty for not carrying a valid two-wheeler insurance policy in India is ₹ 2000 and/or 3 months of imprisonment and community service; if you violate it for the second time, you will be fined ₹ 4000.

  2. Rejection of Claim

If you do not renew your policy on time, the insurance company can reject the claim you raised. The insurance company will not cover the third-party liability in case of damage or loss caused by an accident. You will have to pay for the damage or loss out of pocket. Hence, the whole purpose of the insurance policy will be lost.

  3. Higher Premium Rate on Renewal Post Expiry

If the bike insurance policy has lapsed and the insurance company agrees to renew it, they will charge you higher premium rates after witnessing your carelessness. Apart from this, the insurer will also inspect your bike for damage; you will have to pay a higher amount when they renew the policy.

  4. Loss of NCB

NCB stands for No Claim Bonus. It is an added benefit and provides a certain percentage of savings on your premium rate on renewal for every consecutive year only if the policyholder does not raise a claim. You can save up to 50% on your premium rates if you do not raise a claim for 5 consecutive years.
