8 Tips to Improve Retail Store Security

You can take certain steps to prevent security breaches in your shop. Here are some tips to enhance security and help you to keep your shop safe.

1. Invest in Good Security System

Installing video surveillance systems and alerting alarms is one of the best and most effective ways to improve security in your retail store. Having a reliable security system helps detect the danger before it hits you. Shop owners can monitor the real-time situation of their store and receive instant alerts if any unusual activity is detected by a security system.

Also, it is suggested to install CCTV cameras throughout the store, including places likes, near all the entrances and exits, inside inventory storage rooms, behind billing counters, and in parking lots. Before installing the setup, you must check the system to ensure it’s working and work on the placement plan.

2. Integration of Access Control System

There are cases of cybersecurity attacks in retail stores. With technological advancement, all the systems rely on internet connection. Hence, it increases the chances of hacking because it contains sensitive data like customer payment information, system credentials, and PIN codes.

You must ensure that only authorised individuals have access to these secured panels. It is suggested to install antivirus software to detect the virus or malicious files, use encryption for sensitive data as it needs to be shared across networks and enable two-factor authentication or PIN to access any system.

3. Safeguard Doors and Install Advanced Lock Systems

In the era of modernity, everyone is looking for keyless locks to give their store the utmost security. Shop security plays a very crucial part in the lives of shop owners. Their objective is to secure their business or valuable belongings. Installing the smart lock with limited access that can be locked or unlocked remotely is the best option to secure your shops. Additionally, it is important to invest in sturdy doors that have safety mechanisms to keep out intruders.

4. Invest in a Safe

Investing in an expensive safe can help you to ensure hard copies of sensitive data, cash, and other belongings. Prior to making a purchase, read reviews about the product and see what others say about the brand.

5. Enhance the Retail Store Layout

With the rising effects of digitalisation, more customers come to the store for the ambience and services. An ideal store layout always welcomes the customers and leads ways to increase sales. Before deciding on the store, check the size and the location.

Some other recommendations include placing the product in the right way, focusing on focal prints which attract the buyer, proper utilisation of colour psychology, finding the right place to showcase your SALE, and trying an experiential marketing strategy.

6. Train Employees to Deal with Customers

The best advice is to train your employees on how to greet and treat customers. As a shop owner, you must offer safety training to your employees, like- identification of shoplifters & ways to deal with them, ways to react to customers who give threatening or aggressive messages, and tips to answer probing questions about the business.

Also, encourage employees to maintain eye contact while interacting with the customer and ask them if they need assistance. The best thing you can do is assign a specific area or department for each employee at the beginning of the shift.

7. Enhance the Shop Security with Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)

EAS refers to Electronic Article Surveillance. It is an anti-shoplifting system introduced to prevent intruders from attempting miscellaneous activities. An EAS are attaching tags given to clothing and merchandise to strengthen their security. Make sure an employee must remove the tag after the purchase. In case an EAS tag leaves the retail store without being deactivated or removed, an alert will be sent to the store manager.

8. Buy a Shop Insurance Plan

A store owner must have a shop insurance plan to protect their shop’s property and its contents from unwanted risks. Generally, a shop insurance plan gives cover for instances like fire and natural calamities. However, shops are a greater threat to burglary or robbery, and a shop insurance company also offers protection against damages or loss caused by theft or burglary. Therefore, a shop owner must buy a shop insurance plan to protect the property and belongings from various risks.

It is not possible to keep an eye on your retail space all day. However, having a secured system will keep a watchful eye on your retail store. Therefore, you must incorporate all the tips to keep your business secure. Also, you must have a shop insurance plan to cover your business property and its content from unforeseen circumstances.
