Can You Buy Add-Ons With a Third-Party Bike Insurance Policy?

A third-party bike insurance policy is the most basic and legally mandatory cover for all two-wheelers in India. It protects you from financial liabilities if your vehicle causes injury, death, or property damage to a third party. However, as a bike owner or rider, you might wonder if this policy can be enhanced with add-ons like zero depreciation cover or 24/7 roadside assistance cover? Let's find out.

Understanding Third-Party Bike Insurance

Third-party bike insurance is a type of two wheeler insurance policy that provides legal and financial protection against third-party liabilities arising in a road accident by the policyholder. It does not cover any damage to your own bike due to an accident, fire, theft, or natural calamity.

Basically, it's designed to meet the minimum legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, not to provide any comprehensive coverage, which includes damages to your own bike.

Can You Buy Add-Ons With a Third-Party Two Wheeler Insurance Policy?

No, you cannot buy bike insurance add-ons with a third-party bike insurance policy.

Add-ons or riders are additional covers that enhance the protection of your own vehicle, such as engine cover or zero depreciation. Since a third-party policy doesn't include own damage (OD) coverage, insurers do not allow add-ons with it.

However, there is a single add-on called Personal Accident (PA) cover bike insurance, which is mandated by IRDAI, that can be bought with this policy.

Why are Bike Insurance Add-Ons Only Available with Comprehensive or Own-Damage Bike Insurance Policies?

Bike insurance add-ons are meant to strengthen your own damage component. Here's why they are linked to comprehensive or standalone OD plans:

Add-On Type What It Covers Available With
Zero Depreciation Cover Full claim without depreciation deduction Comprehensive/OD
Engine Protect Cover Damage due to water ingression or oil leakage Comprehensive/OD
Roadside Assistance Help during breakdowns Comprehensive/OD
Return to Invoice Compensation equal to the bike's invoice value Comprehensive/OD
Consumables Cover Covers nuts, bolts, and oil change costs Comprehensive/OD

These benefits directly apply to your own vehicle, which is why they're not available under a third-party bike insurance policy.

How to Get Bike Insurance Add-Ons for Better Coverage?

If you want the flexibility to include add-ons, you can upgrade your plan to:

  • Comprehensive Bike Insurance: It combines third-party and own damage coverage, allowing you to buy multiple add-ons.
  • Standalone Own Damage (OD) Cover: If you already have a third-party bike insurance policy, you can buy an OD policy separately to protect your bike and enjoy various add-ons.

This way, you stay legally compliant while getting enhanced financial protection.

Let's understand a situation with the help of an example:

Let's say you have a third-party policy and your bike suffers engine damage during monsoon floods. Since the engine protection add-on is unavailable with third-party insurance, you must pay the repair cost yourself. If you had a comprehensive bike insurance policy with engine protection cover, the insurer would have covered those expenses.
