Why Are Add-On Covers in a Two-Wheeler Insurance Policy Required?

What is an EV Shield Add-on Cover?

EV Shield is an optional add-on available with a comprehensive e-bike insurance policies. It provides extended protection for critical electric vehicle components used in electric bikes and scooters, as defined in the policy terms and conditions.

While EV Shield is a common add-on across electric vehicles, the coverage explained here applies specifically to e-bike insured under two-wheeler insurance.

What Does EV Shield Cover?

EV Shield covers damage or loss to insured EV components such as the battery pack, motor, controller, and charging equipment due to covered events. These include electrical or mechanical failure, short circuits, water ingress, and accidental damage, subject to the insurer’s policy conditions. This add-on helps minimise the high repair or replacement costs of electric two-wheeler components that may not be fully covered under a standard bike insurance policy.

Why EV Shield is Important for Electric Two-Wheelers?

Electric two-wheelers may have fewer moving parts, but their electric components are costly and highly sensitive. Battery replacement alone can account for a large share of the vehicle’s value. The EV Shield add-on helps protect you from such EV-specific expenses, offering greater financial security and peace of mind while riding your electric bike.

Conditions Applicable to the EV Shield Add-on Cover

Like any insurance product, EV shield cover works within defined conditions. Here's when and how you can claim benefits:

  1. Water Ingression Damage

You will receive compensation only if there's verifiable evidence of water inundation that has directly damaged your covered parts (battery, drive motor, or HEV system). Simple moisture or minor exposure won't qualify unless it leads to functional damage.
  2. Short Circuit Damage

The coverage applies if the short circuit occurs while mounting, dismounting, or charging the vehicle, and only if it causes failure or damage to insured components. Minor electrical faults that don't harm components may not be covered.
  3. Accidental External Damage

If the loss is caused by accidental external means, like impact, collision, or object fall, no depreciation will apply to the replacement of the EV battery. This ensures you receive full compensation without any deductions for battery age or usage. These terms ensure that compensation or payout amount is linked to actual & verifiable causes rather than routine wear and tear.

Coverage Under EV Shield Add-on Cover

Inclusions

Loss or Damage to the Electrical Panel of the Vehicle Charging Point
The policy covers the electrical panel of your vehicle's charging point against damage or loss caused by perils listed in the policy documents. However, the key condition is that this panel must be exclusively installed for your insured vehicle. If the same panel is shared with multiple vehicles, it won't be covered.
Loss or Damage to Vehicle Charger, Including Charging Cable
Chargers and cables are vital for electric bikes, but are also fragile and expensive to replace. Under the EV shield add-on, it covers both wall-mounted and portable chargers for loss or damage caused by insured perils, including animal bites, theft, or short circuits. This feature ensures that even if your charger is stolen, chewed by pets, or damaged due to a power surge, you can get a replacement without paying the full amount yourself.
Assistance Services Specific to EVs or EV Roadside Assistance Coverage
Electric vehicles can sometimes leave you in the middle of a journey, especially if the battery runs out mid-journey or the charging system malfunctions. EV shield includes roadside assistance services tailored for EVs, ensuring help reaches you promptly, such as:

Mobile Charging Station Service

If your e-bike or scooter battery runs out of charge, the insurer will dispatch a mobile generator van or portable charging unit to your location.

You can use this service for:

  • Up to 30 minutes of charging, or
  • Until the battery reaches 30% charge, whichever comes first.

If you wish to charge beyond this limit, the additional cost is your responsibility. This feature is extremely useful for riders who often travel long distances or through areas with limited charging infrastructure.

Battery Replacement (for Swappable Battery Vehicles)

If your EV has a swappable battery, and you're stranded with a discharged one, the insurer will arrange a fully charged replacement battery to be delivered to your vehicle's location.

Exclusions

Total or Constructive Total Loss
If your e-bike is declared a total loss, this add-on does not apply.
Double Coverage Situations
If the same loss is already covered under another two wheeler insurance policy, manufacturer's warranty, recall campaign, or service package, the insurer will not pay again.
Delayed Reporting
The insurer must be informed about the event within the specified days from the day of the incident.
Unauthorised Repairs
Any repairs carried out without prior approval from the insurer will void the claim under this add-on.
Negligence or Improper Charging
If you fail to follow OEM charging guidelines or damage results from overcharging or incorrect charger usage, claims will not be entertained.
Wear and Tear
Gradual deterioration or normal wear of electrical components is excluded from the policy inclusions.
Poor Battery Health or Maintenance
If the battery's health has fallen below the OEM-specified levels, or if it was already dead due to a lack of charging or neglect, you cannot make a claim.
Delayed Charging After Stoppage
If your bike stops due to over-discharge and you fail to plug it in within 24 hours, subsequent damage won't be covered.
Lack of Reasonable Care
Failure to protect the vehicle from further damage or exposure after an incident may result in the rejection of the claim.

How EV Shield Helps in Real Life?

Imagine you’ve recently bought an electric scooter, and during the monsoon, rainwater seeps into your garage and damages the charging panel or electrical circuitry. Such EV components are expensive, and without EV Shield add-on cover, you would have to pay the entire repair or replacement cost yourself, often ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 or even more.

With the EV Shield add-on cover, the process becomes easier. Once the damage is noticed, you simply inform your insurer and register a claim. After inspection, the insurer confirms that the damage occurred due to water ingression, which is a covered EV-specific risk under the add-on. The insurer then covers the cost of repairing or replacing the damaged component without applying depreciation, helping restore your electric scooter to its original condition without a financial burden.

With EV Shield Cover:

  • You report the claim promptly.
  • The insurer verifies that the damage is due to water ingress (a covered peril).
  • The insurer pays for the replacement without depreciation.
