ICICI Bank Interest Rates on Savings Account

ICICI Bank currently pays 2.50% per annum on savings accounts, and this rate stays the same no matter how much money you're holding in the account. There's no slab system here, so a balance of ₹5,000 earns the same rate as a balance of ₹5 lakh. The bank works out interest daily based on your closing balance each day, so if your balance dips or rises during the month, that gets reflected in what you earn. Payout happens once every quarter, not monthly.

Minimum Account Balance Requirement for ICICI Bank Savings Account

Location Type Minimum Average Balance
Rural ₹2500
Semi Urban ₹7500
Urban & Metro ₹15000

Penalty for Not Maintaining Minimum Balance

Falling short of the required MAB isn't free. ICICI charges either ₹500 or 6% of the shortfall amount, whichever works out lower for the customer. So if you're short by a small amount, the penalty stays proportionally low rather than hitting you with a flat fee every time.

Certain customer categories are exempt from this rule entirely:

  • Salary account holders
  • Eligible students
  • Pensioners

FAQs

  • Which savings account should I choose if I'm a student?

The Campus Power Account is built specifically for the 18 to 30 age group. It's a zero-balance account with a complimentary credit card, preferential education loan rates, flat brokerage of ₹20 on investments, and Air Accident Insurance cover of ₹50,000.
  • Can I open a savings account for my child?

Yes, through the Young Stars Account, meant for children below 18. It comes with a debit card carrying a spend and withdrawal cap (commonly cited around ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 daily) so children can learn money management without unrestricted access to funds. Parents typically operate it jointly as guardians.
  • Is there a savings account for salaried employees?

The Salary Privilege Account is designed for this. It requires no minimum balance as long as salary keeps getting credited, has no cash transaction limits, and doesn't charge an annual fee. If your salary stops for two consecutive months, the bank converts it into a Regular Savings Account, after which standard MAB rules apply.
