NPS is a defined contribution pension scheme which is voluntary and regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). Through an NPS account, you can manage your NPS contributions and track how your investment grows. Subscribers have to contribute a minimum of ₹1,000 to the NPS Tier I account every year. Under the current All Citizen Model, normal-exit options depend on the accumulated pension wealth. For corpus up to ₹12 lakh, additional withdrawal options are available subject to applicable conditions. The general option of up to 80% lump-sum withdrawal and at least 20% annuitisation also applies, subject to the applicable exit rules.

Prerequisites for Checking NPS Balance
Before checking your NPS balance, keep the following details ready:
PRAN: PRAN is a 12-digit number which is also known as permanent retirement account number.
Online Access: You must have your account log-in information to access online.
Registered Mobile Number: You are required to provide your mobile number in order to receive any SMS alerts or missed calls.
Registered Email ID: You must possess an authenticated email address so that you can request balance and create alerts via email.
Internet connection: In order to check your balance on the CRA website, mobile apps or your email, you should have a good internet connection which is not required for SMS and missed calls facility.
How to Check NPS Balance Using the CRA Portal (Online)
Your NPS account is maintained by the CRA associated with your PRAN. Subscribers can access their holdings and transaction information through the relevant CRA's subscriber services. This portal shows your current NPS balance with the help of below steps:
Visit the official subscriber portal of the CRA associated with your PRAN and select the subscriber login option depending on which CRA services your PRAN is associated with.
Click on the subscriber login option and select "Existing Subscriber."
Enter your 12-digit PRAN as the user ID, along with your password (IPIN).
Enter the captcha shown on screen and click "Submit."
After logging in, use the available holdings or account summary section to view your current NPS holdings.
To see the underlying detail, select "Holding Statement" for a snapshot of current holdings, or "Transaction Statement" for a full record of contributions and redemptions.
Holding Statement vs Transaction Statement: What's the Difference
Both are generated from the same login, but they answer different questions and are not interchangeable.
Holding Statement: Shows your current units and their present value based on the latest NAV, across all fund managers. Use it to check how much you have today.
Transaction Statement: Lists every contribution, redemption and transfer over a chosen period, split between your own and employer contributions. It can be used to review contribution history and reconcile transactions.

How to Check NPS Balance via Net Banking
Some banks and other Points of Presence (PoPs) provide NPS-related services through their digital platforms. The availability of balance-viewing and statement facilities varies by institution, so you may not need the CRA portal at all if you contribute through your bank. Key steps are:
Log in to your bank's net banking using your regular internet banking credentials, not your PRAN and IPIN
Locate the investments section, commonly labelled "Investment and Insurance" or "Investments"
Select "National Pension System" from the available options
Choose your NPS account and select Tier I or Tier II
View your portfolio and contribution summary on screen, or use "Download Statement" for a copy
Check your bank's mobile app for the same NPS section under "Invest" or "NPS," using the same login as net banking
Banks That Support NPS Balance Check
Most major public and private sector banks acting as NPS Points of Presence offer this. Below are some of them.
State Bank of India
ICICI Bank
HDFC Bank
Axis Bank
Punjab National Bank
Bank of Baroda
How to Check NPS Balance Without Internet
The NPS subscriber can also avail the missed call service for retrieving their balance. Create a CRA portal or app account, register your mobile number for missed call alerts:
Log in to your NPS account using your PRAN or IPIN and password.
Go to “Profile Settings.”
Register for “Missed Call Alerts” by entering your registered mobile number.
Registered subscribers can call 1800 2100 080 and use the IVR service with their T-PIN to access NPS account details.
How to Set Up Email Alerts for NPS Balance
You can also configure email alerts to receive your NPS account information:
Log in to the CRA website or NPS app using your PRAN or IPIN and password.
Go to “Profile Settings.”
Update your email address.
Confirm the email address using the confirmation email received.
You can then receive your NPS statement and other account information by email.
Tier I vs Tier II Balance: How to Check Separately
Tier I and Tier II are separate NPS accounts associated with the same PRAN. The way Tier I and Tier II holdings and transactions are displayed may vary by CRA or platform.
Selecting Tier I shows only your retirement account, and selecting Tier II shows only your voluntary savings account, each with its own contribution history and current value.
If you only ever see Tier I as an option, it means Tier II has not been activated on your PRAN yet. A Tier II account is linked to the subscriber's PRAN and may be opened along with Tier I or activated later by an existing Tier I account holder.
Eligibility Criteria to Open an NPS Account
An individual can open an NPS account if they meet the following mandatory eligibility criteria:
Citizenship: Must be an Indian citizen (resident or non-resident) or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)
Age: Must be between 18 and 85 years of age.
Individual Account: This account is for an individual person and cannot be opened for third person.
Exclusions: NPS is not available for subscription for Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs).
Troubleshooting: Common NPS Balance Check Issues
A few issues come up often enough during a balance check that they are worth addressing on their own.
Forgot Your PRAN? Not remembering your PRAN blocks the login screen before you even start. Recover it using "Forgot PRAN" on the eNPS portal with your date of birth, mobile number or email, or check your PRAN card, welcome kit, or past NPS SMS and emails.
Mobile Number Not Updated or Linked: An outdated mobile number breaks missed call alerts, SMS checks and instant password resets in one go, since all three verify you through it. Submit a Subscriber Details Change Form (S2 Form) to your nodal office or POP Service Provider to fix it. Until then, the CRA Portal and UMANG App still work with your PRAN and password.
Recent Contribution Not Reflecting: A contribution that has not shown up yet is usually just delayed, not lost. A recent contribution may take some time to appear because it must pass through the applicable contribution and settlement process. If it does not appear after the applicable processing period, check the transaction status and contact the relevant PoP or CRA.
Forgot Password or IPIN: Getting locked out happens easily if you check your balance only once or twice a year. Use "Forgot Password" and select "Instant Reset IPIN" on your CRA portal, then enter your PRAN and date of birth. This works only if your mobile number and email are current, update them via the S2 Form first if not.
To check your NPS balance online, log in to your respective CRA portal using your 12-digit PRAN and password or I-PIN. Once you are logged in you can promptly check your NPS balance online.
Can I check my NPS balance Via SMS?
Yes, you can check certain NPS account details through SMS services available from the CRA. The service can provide account-related information to your registered mobile number.
How do I check my pension balance online?
If you mean your NPS balance, you can check it online through your respective CRA portal or the UMANG App. To view your accumulated corpus and transaction details login with your PRAN and Password.
How can I check my NPS balance without internet?
You can access NPS account information without internet by using the CRA-supported telephonic service. Registered subscribers can call 1800 2100 080 and use the IVR service with their T-PIN, subject to the applicable CRA service.
How do I check my Tier I and Tier II balance separately?
On the CRA Portal, eNPS, UMANG App or NPS by Protean App, select Tier I or Tier II before viewing your statement. Each platform asks you to choose the tier first, so the balance shown reflects only that account.
What if my mobile number isn't linked to my PRAN?
If you have not linked PRAN to your mobile number missed call and instant password reset will not work. Submit a Subscriber Details Change Form (S2 Form) to your nodal office or POP Service Provider to update it. Meanwhile, you can still check your balance via the CRA Portal or UMANG App using your PRAN and password.
