How to Claim Term Insurance for NRIs in Oman 2026

If you work in Oman and your family depends on your income, a term plan from India helps protect them. The Ministry of External Affairs puts the number of NRIs in Oman at about 6.8 lakh (as of January 2026). To claim it, your family gets the death certificate from the Royal Oman Police, has it apostilled by Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and files the claim online.

Can an NRI's Family Claim Term Insurance From Oman?

Yes. NRIs are globally protected with a term plan for NRIs from an Indian insurer. It covers death anywhere in the world, and the claim can be made completely online from Oman. The nominee does not have to live in India or travel there. RBI has clear rules for paying life insurance claims to people who live outside India, including nominees, so a spouse or child in Oman can receive the claim money.

The claim form and documents are uploaded online or sent by courier, and the insurer's claims team, or your Policybazaar relationship manager, handles the rest from India.

How to Claim Term Insurance when Death Happens in Oman?

These are the steps to claim term insurance for an NRI in Oman, in the order most families follow them.

Step 1: Report the death and get the hospital's death notification

The first call is to the police. According to the Embassy of India in Muscat, the sponsor (usually the employer) must inform the nearest police station and collect a Death Notification from the hospital where the death is registered.

Step 2: Get the death certificate from the Royal Oman Police

In Oman, the death certificate is not issued by the hospital. The Civil Status Department of the Royal Oman Police issues it, based on the hospital's Death Notification. The sponsor first takes the NOC and the notification to the police station where the death was registered, to get the body released, and then goes to the Civil Status Department for the certificate. Ask for a few copies, since the insurer, the bank and the Embassy may each need one.

Step 3: Get the death certificate apostilled

Oman joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2012, and India is also a member. This means an Omani death certificate only needs an apostille from Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be accepted in India. Legally, it does not need a separate attestation by the Indian Embassy, though it is worth confirming with the insurer what it accepts. If the certificate is in Arabic only, get a legal English translation for the insurer.

Step 4: Register the death with the Embassy of India in Muscat

The Embassy says the death of every Indian citizen in Oman has to be registered with it. The family or sponsor submits the original documents to the Embassy, which registers the death, cancels the deceased's passport and issues the NOC for local burial, cremation or sending the body to India. Keep copies of everything the Embassy issues, as some insurers ask for proof of this registration.

Step 5: Intimate the claim and submit the documents

The nominee informs the insurer online, by email or by phone with the basic details: policy number, name of the life assured, date, place and cause of death, and their own contact details. The documents can follow by upload or courier. Do not wait for the apostille before intimating the claim.

If the policy was bought through Policybazaar, one call starts the process. Family members in India can call the claim helpline on 1800-258-5881, and a nominee in Oman can use the relationship manager's direct number or email on the Claim Assistance Card.

Step 6: Settlement of the claim

Under IRDAI's Master Circular on Protection of Policyholders' Interests, 2024, insurers must settle a death claim within 15 days of intimation if no investigation is needed, and within 45 days if it is. If they delay beyond this, they must pay interest at 2% above the bank rate. If a claim is rejected, the insurer must give its reasons in writing.

Documents Needed for a Term Insurance Claim from Oman

Insurers ask for slightly different papers, and more are needed if the death was accidental. Keep this list of below mentioned documents handy.

  • Death certificate from the Civil Status Department of the Royal Oman Police, apostilled by Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • Legal English translation, if the certificate is in Arabic only

  • Hospital death notification and medical records, where relevant

  • For an accident or unnatural death: police report and post-mortem report, with English translations

  • Proof of death registration from the Embassy of India in Muscat, if the insurer asks for it

  • Claim form, signed by the nominee

  • Original policy document, or an indemnity bond if it is lost

  • Passport copy and Omani resident card copy of the deceased

  • Photo ID and address proof

  • Passport copy, if the nominee is an NRI

  • Bank details: a savings or current account for a nominee in India, or an NRE or NRO account for a nominee in Oman, with a cancelled cheque or bank statement

The insurer may ask for more documents depending on the case.

Where is the Claim Paid if your Family Lives in Oman?

Every Indian term plan pays the claim in rupees, into a bank account in India. For NRIs in Oman, the term insurance plan claim can be credited to the nominee's savings, current, NRE or NRO account, depending on where the nominee lives.

For the Nominee living in India: The claim is credited straight to the nominee's savings or current account and can be used right away.

For Nominee living in Oman: The claim is first credited to the nominee's NRE or NRO account in India. The nominee can then transfer the money to a bank account in Oman whenever needed.

What is the cost of transferring the claim money from India to Oman?

There is no income tax on the transfer in India or Oman. The only costs are the bank's transfer fee, its exchange-rate margin, and GST on currency conversion, which is capped at ₹10,800 per transaction under India's GST rules. For a large term insurance claim, compare a few banks or exchange houses before sending the money to Oman.

NRI Term Insurance

NRE or NRO: Which Account will the Claim Go Into?

This depends on how you paid your premiums, not on where your nominee lives. RBI's Master Direction on Insurance ties the payout to the source of the premium.

How you paid the premiums Where the claim goes Can it be sent to Oman?
From your NRE account, or straight from your Omani salary Nominee's NRE account Yes, with no limit
From your NRO account, such as rent or interest earned in India Nominee's NRO account, in rupees Yes, up to USD 1 million a year

What if you paid from both over the years?

In this case the claim is split in the same ratio. On a ₹1 crore cover where 70% of the premiums came from NRE and 30% from NRO, your nominee would get roughly ₹70 lakh in NRE and ₹30 lakh in NRO, based on your payment records. Paying all premiums from a single NRE account keeps things simpler for your family.

Is a Term Insurance Claim Taxable For NRIs in Oman?

No. A term insurance claim is 100% tax-free in India, and Oman does not tax it today either. But Oman is the first Gulf country to bring in a personal income tax, so it is worth knowing what changes in 2028.

In India

The death benefit is fully exempt from income tax, whatever the cover amount, for NRIs and resident Indians alike (Section 11 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, earlier Section 10(10D)). The main exception is a keyman policy taken by an employer. The insurer does not deduct TDS.

In Oman(As Per Current Tax Laws)

Oman has no personal income tax at present, so a nominee in Oman pays no tax on the claim.

In Oman from 2028

Oman's first Personal Income Tax Law (Royal Decree No. 56/2025) takes effect on 1 January 2028. It charges a 5% tax only on individuals with gross annual income above OMR 42,000, and Oman's Tax Authority expects about 99% of the population to be unaffected. Income from inheritance and gifts between spouses or close relatives is exempt. The law does not specifically address life insurance payouts, and the detailed regulations are still to come, so families with very high incomes should consult a tax adviser in Oman after 2028.

When an NRI Term Insurance Claim from Oman Needs Extra Paperwork

  • Nominee is a Child: A child cannot receive the money directly. The policy should name an appointee, an adult who receives the claim for the child until they turn 18. If no appointee was named, the insurer may ask for a guardianship certificate from a court in India, which can take months.

  • There is no nominee, or the nominee has also died: The claim then goes to the legal heirs. They will need a succession certificate or legal heir certificate, an indemnity bond, and ID and bank details of every heir. Getting a succession certificate from an Indian court takes time.

  • The death happened in India during a visit: The process stays the same, but the family submits the death certificate issued by the local municipal authority or registrar in India. No apostille is needed.

  • The death happened in another country: The family needs that country's death certificate, apostilled or attested as that country requires, and registered with the Indian Embassy there, with an English translation if needed. The rest of the claim process for NRIs stays the same.

The first two cases are the ones that cause the longest delays, and both can be avoided today. Check that an appointee is named if your nominee is a child, and update your nominee after marriage, the birth of a child or the death of a nominee.

How does Policybazaar Helps Families in Oman?

Policybazaar has already helped NRI families in Oman through the claim process: 3 claims worth ₹2.5 crore so far, according to its claims data.

Policybazaar runs a dedicated claim assistance team for every term customer, including NRIs, and helps with the whole process free of charge. Every policy comes with a Claim Assistance Card showing the policy details and the relationship manager's name, phone number and email, so share it with your nominee.

When a claim comes up, this is what the team does:

  • One call starts it. The nominee calls the 24x7 helpline or the relationship manager on the Claim Assistance Card.

  • One person handles it. A dedicated relationship manager is assigned to the case. Family members in India also get free doorstep document pick-up in 85+ cities.

  • The paperwork is checked. The relationship manager tells the family exactly what is needed for a death in Oman, including the apostille and translation, and checks the documents before they go to the insurer.

  • The claim is followed through. Policybazaar represents the case with the insurer from day one, tracks it and escalates delays until the claim is settled.

If the insurer rejects the claim, Policybazaar's Second Opinion Guarantee comes in. The team builds a case for the insurer's senior claims review committee, takes it to the insurer's grievance cell and, if needed, helps the family approach the Insurance Ombudsman.

Family members in India can call the claim helpline on 1800-258-5881. From Oman, use the relationship manager's direct number or email on the Claim Assistance Card.

Key takeaways

  • NRIs in Oman are globally protected by an Indian term plan, and the claim can be made completely online from Oman.

  • The Royal Oman Police's Civil Status Department issues the death certificate, and Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs apostilles it.

  • Every death of an Indian citizen in Oman must be registered with the Embassy of India in Muscat.

  • The claim is paid in rupees into a savings, current, NRE or NRO account in India, and NRE money can be sent to Oman with no limit.

  • The payout is tax-free in India and is not taxed in Oman today. Oman's new income tax from 2028 applies only above OMR 42,000 a year.

FAQs

  • Who issues the death certificate in Oman?

Ans: The Civil Status Department of the Royal Oman Police, based on the Death Notification from the hospital where the death was registered.
  • Does an Omani death certificate need attestation by the Indian Embassy?

Ans: No, not legally. Oman and India are both members of the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille from Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is enough. Check with your insurer, as practices can vary.
  • Do we have to register the death with the Indian Embassy?

Ans: Yes. The Embassy of India in Muscat says every death of an Indian citizen in Oman must be registered with it. The Embassy also cancels the passport and issues the NOC for burial, cremation or sending the body to India.
  • Will the claim be paid in Omani rials?

Ans: No. Indian term plans pay in rupees to an Indian bank account. The nominee can then send it to Oman: from an NRE account with no limit, or from an NRO account up to USD 1 million per financial year.
  • Will my family pay tax on the claim in Oman after 2028?

Ans: Most families will not. The new tax applies only to individuals earning over OMR 42,000 a year, and inheritance income is exempt. The law does not specifically mention life insurance payouts, so very high earners should check with a tax adviser.
  • Can my wife in Oman file the claim without travelling to India?

Ans: Yes. She can intimate the claim online and send the documents by courier. If the policy was bought through Policybazaar, the relationship manager coordinates with the insurer for her.
  • What if my nominee doesn't have an Indian bank account?

Ans: They will need to open an NRE or NRO account in India. Many Indian banks let NRIs open these accounts online from Oman.
  • Does the term insurance plan cover death that happens in Oman?

Ans: Yes. Term plans from Indian insurers pay on death anywhere in the world, subject to the policy terms and standard exclusions, such as suicide within the first year.
