Term Plans
Term insurance for NRIs in the UAE is designed for Indian expats living and working there. It is one of the most affordable ways to get life cover, since you pay a low premium for a high sum assured. With a PolicyBazaar NRI term insurance plan, you can make sure your family stays financially secure in India even if something unfortunate happens to you
Term insurance is the simplest and most affordable way to protect your family financially in your absence. If you pass away during the policy term, the insurer pays your nominee a lump sum selected by you, based on what your family would actually need. Most NRI term plans also let you add riders, so you're covered against the financial impact of a serious illness or accident, not just death.
Term Plans
Term insurance for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living in the UAE works by allowing them to purchase term insurance online from Indian insurers. This helps them to protect their family living in India if something unfortunate happens to them. The plan works exactly like a term insurance policy for Indian resident, with three practical differences:
Extra documentation — passport, visa/Emirates ID, and overseas address and income proof.
Medical checks done remotely — most insurers now offer video or tele-medical examinations for NRIs in the UAE instead of requiring travel to India.
Premium payment through NRE/NRO accounts — or, increasingly, via international debit/credit cards.
Let's understand how term insurance for NRI living in the UAE works with a below example
Suman, a 23 year old living in the UAE, chooses to buy a term insurance for NRIs to secure her family living in India. She purchases a plan for a 37-year policy term that will cover her until she turns 60.
Now suppose that, in the 17th policy year, Suman met with an unfortunate accident and died. Her family, who are living in India, will have to inform the insurer of her death and submit a duly filled claims form. After verifying the documents, the insurer settles the term insurance claim and provides the death benefit amount as the life cover.

Indian expatriates need NRI term insurance for the following reasons:
Why buying from India usually makes more sense
Most Indians in the UAE compare local insurance options with Indian term plans before they buy. Once you look at the numbers, an Indian plan usually wins out, here's why.
Affordable. Indian insurers price policies off Indian mortality data, and the market here is genuinely competitive. So a healthy 30-year-old non-smoker buying ₹1 crore of cover will usually get quoted somewhere around ₹15,000–₹16,000 a year from an Indian insurer. The same cover, bought locally in the UAE, often costs ₹30,000–₹40,000 per year. That's not a small gap.
No GST anymore. From 22 September 2025, the government scrapped GST on individual term insurance entirely, it used to be 18%. This applies to everyone, NRIs included, no matter which account you pay from. So whatever premium the insurer quotes you is what you actually pay. Nothing gets added on top.
Tax breaks that actually help. If you have taxable income in India- rent, say, or capital gains premiums up to ₹1.5 lakh a year can be claimed under Section 80C, as long as you're on the old tax regime. And the payout your family eventually receives is tax-free under Section 10(10D). Since your UAE salary isn't taxed in India anyway, this deduction mostly matters if you've got other Indian income.
Claims are just easier to deal with. Your nominee is almost certainly going to be in India. So when the time comes, it's a lot less hassle for your family to deal with an Indian insurer than to chase down a claim with a foreign company from a different country.
