Folio Number

When investing in a mutual fund, you are allotted a folio number. This number is similar to the account number of your investments, ensuring the AMC can accurately track and manage your investments. It makes tracking, managing, and servicing your mutual fund investments easier and ensures all transactions are properly linked under one AMC folio.

What is Folio Number?

A Folio Number is a special identification number that a mutual fund company (Asset Management Company) gives to an investor when investing in the company for the first time. It is a mutual fund account number that stores all your investment details with that fund house.

When you invest in multiple schemes of the same AMC, your investments may be combined under one folio if the names of the investors are identical. Some investments may result in separate folios, which can later be consolidated.

For example, you may invest in three similar schemes of the same fund house using different SIPs. You are not required to have three account numbers for each investment; you can combine them on a single folio number.

It is now a lot easier to keep track of your investments, see how you have been making returns on them, and get the consolidated account statements.

Importance of Folio Number in Mutual Fund

A folio number is key in mutual fund investment tracking, management, and servicing. Its importance can be understood from both the investor’s and the fund house’s perspective:

  1. Single Reference Point

Rather than having many account numbers or knowing every transaction you have made, the folio number is a reference point for all your investments with a particular AMC. It streamlines the process of tracking and communication of portfolios.

  2. Quicker Transactions

The folio number will automatically fill in your information whenever you do a transaction, whether buying an additional unit, transferring funds, or redeeming your investment. It properly connects the transaction to your investor account, so you do not have to repeat your personal details.

  3. Accurate Servicing

Any service request, whether changing your contact details, adding a nominee, or updating bank account information, can be processed effectively when attached to your folio number.

  4. Portfolio Consolidation

Depending on the AMC’s policy, investors may be able to have multiple schemes under one folio number. CAMS, KFintech, and MF Central are registrar and transfer agents (RTAs), not AMCs. Consolidation will facilitate less duplication and give a clearer picture of investments in general. Other AMCs, including UTI, also stress the service requests and identification of investors using the folio number.

Key Benefits of Folio Number

The folio number is a core element of mutual fund investment tracking, management, and servicing. Its importance can be understood from both the investor’s and the fund house’s perspective:

  1. Convenient Tracking and Portfolio

Your folio number can be used to see all investments under one mutual fund house. With either a single scheme or multiple schemes, you can track performance, see NAV changes, or track SIPs in one dashboard.

  2. Consolidated Account Statements

The investors have a consolidated statement of all investments under the same folio. This makes it easy to keep records and trace capital gains or dividends while filing taxes.

  3. Safe and Reliable Transactions

The folio number also ensures that each purchase, redemption, and switch is associated with the right investor account to prevent mapping and data duplication errors.

  4. Ease of Future Investments

Once your folio number is generated and KYC is verified, you do not need to repeat KYC for additional investments within the same AMC. KYC is required only once per investor across all AMCs, as it is linked to your PAN. Or enter the details each time you invest in a different scheme of the same AMC. You just have to use the folio number to invest later on.

  5. Helpful for Financial Planning

A folio number consolidates all your mutual fund investments in one place, giving you an easy-to-understand and structured image of your portfolio. This facilitates performance monitoring, asset allocation evaluation, and determines whether you are on track to achieve your long-term financial objectives.

How to Find a Folio Number?

If you have invested in mutual funds and do not remember your folio number, there are several easy ways to locate it. These are:

  1. Check Account Statements

Your mutual fund account statement is the fastest method of locating your folio number. The folio number will most often be printed at the top of the statement, regardless of whether it is received physically or electronically.

  2. AMC Website or Mobile App

Asset Management Companies (AMCs) operate most online portals and apps. You can easily access your folio number and investment details by registering with your PAN, email ID, or registered mobile number.

  3. Registrar Portals (CAMS or KFintech)

If you have invested in two or more fund houses, visit the CAMS, KFintech, or MF Central website. You can view all your folio numbers across different AMCs by entering your PAN and registered email on their respective portals.

  4. Email and SMS Alerts

Fund houses send transaction confirmations, statements, and updates via your registered email and mobile number. These messages usually include the folio number.

  5. Contact Customer Care

Customer support of the AMC is also reachable by calling or through email. They can tell you your folio number, having checked on your identity. Having your Folio Number on hand is also advisable to simplify dealing with your investments, and communication with fund houses is no longer a hassle.

Key Takeaways

The folio number is the key to systematically and effectively managing your investment portfolio. This distinct identifier eases the process of tracking, record-keeping, and transactions. Each AMC issues its own folio number. Investments in different AMCs require separate folios, as folios are not transferable across AMCs. Knowing your folio number helps you manage mutual fund investments efficiently, even during volatile market phases. To keep your financial journey well-organised and secure, do not forget to note down your Folio Numbers since they are your investment history in mutual funds.

FAQs

  • What is Folio Number Example?

A Folio Number is a special identification number that a mutual fund company gives an investor when they engage in their initial investment. For example, if you invested ₹10,000 in an equity mutual fund scheme of ABC Mutual Fund, you would be given a folio number such as 1234567890. In the future, when you invest in a different scheme of the same AMC with the same details, you will be associated with this folio number.
  • Why is Folio Number Important?

The folio number is essential for tracking and managing your mutual fund investments. It acts as your account number within the fund house, allowing you to easily view all your schemes, make additional purchases, switch funds, or redeem units. It simplifies record-keeping, speeds up service requests, and helps avoid confusion if you hold multiple schemes.
  • How Do I Get a Copy of My Folio?

Visit the AMC website or mobile app to download your account statement and get a copy of your folio details. It is also available to view via CAMS or KFintech portals, query your registered email to retrieve previous statements, or call the AMC's customer care.
  • Can individuals have more than one valid Folio Number?

An investor may own several folio numbers with the same AMC, resulting from investing multiple times or using different channels or options. Although having several folios might help in tax planning to a certain extent, consolidating them where applicable can improve efficiency in tracking and managing investments. Consolidation is typically done through the AMC or its registrar and transfer agent (RTA).
  • How to check mutual fund status with a folio number?

To check your mutual fund status with folio number, you can try the following ways:
    • AMC Website or Mobile App: Login or create an account with your folio number, PAN, or registered mobile number. You can see your portfolio, units, NAVs, and general investment position.
    • AMC Customer Care / Branch: Call AMC Customer Care or visit one of the branches of AMC to obtain offline help concerning your folio or account status.
    • Registrar Websites: Use registrar portals such as CAMS or KFintech, which aggregate investments across two or more AMCs, to help track investments.
    • Broker Platforms: In case you invest, use a broker, then you can monitor your performance and mutual fund holdings through the platform.
    • Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) / Email or SMS Statements: Request a CAS, or request account statements through email or SMS using your folio number to be given all the holdings in summary.
