An annual report is a comprehensive financial document released annually by public organisations to provide an overview of their business operations and financial performance. It acts as an essential source of information for shareholders, analysts, and potential investors to evaluate the organisation’s financial health, stability, and growth prospects.
In the case of mutual funds, an annual report acts as a transparent communication channel between the Asset Management Company (AMC) and its investors. AMCs must publish the scheme-wise annual report or an abridged summary on their websites and send it to unitholders by email or post by 31 July each year.
As per the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulations, every mutual fund scheme must prepare audited financial statements following Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) from FY 2023-24 onward. This includes scheme-wise portfolio holdings and attaches an independent auditor’s report. These statements are verified by SEBI-registered chartered accountants, while the trustees review and approve them to ensure fairness, accuracy, and compliance.
These reports help investors assess whether the fund’s operations, investment strategy, and returns remain consistent with its stated investment objectives.

Annual reports in mutual funds remain a key resource for financial reporting, even with alternative sources like fund prospectuses, press releases, and social media. Key reasons why these reports matter include:
An annual report in mutual funds is a structured document that provides comprehensive details about a fund’s performance and operations. It contains the following key components:
The report introduces the mutual fund, including the type of fund (e.g., equity, debt, hybrid), its investment objective, and the benchmark index. This section helps investors understand the fund’s strategy and risk profile.
This particular annual report section offers insights from the fund manager, discussing the year's market conditions, key investment decisions, and strategies. It provides a perspective on the fund's management and future outlook.
The portfolio holdings section lists the fund’s investments, including the names of companies or instruments, the quantity held, their market value, and sectoral allocation. This helps investors to assess the diversification and risk exposure of the fund.
This section compares the fund’s returns against benchmarks such as the Nifty 50 or Sensex. Some reports may also include risk-adjusted metrics like Alpha, Beta, or Sharpe Ratio to help investors understand the fund’s relative and risk-based performance.
This section lists all recurring expenses of the scheme, such as management fees, trustee fees, custodian charges, registrar and transfer fees, audit costs, and other permissible expenses. The Total Expense Ratio (TER) shows the portion of scheme assets used for these expenses. SEBI now requires AMCs to disclose TER separately for direct and regular plans, along with half-yearly expense and return data published on the AMC’s website for each plan.
The report includes SEBI-required disclosures such as changes in key personnel, investor complaints, related-party transactions, compliance status, and any change in the fund’s fundamental attributes. Trustees must also ensure that conflicts of interest are managed and that investor interests are protected in line with SEBI’s latest trustee responsibility norms.
An independent auditor reviews the fund’s financial statements to confirm their accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. This adds credibility to the report and ensures investors can trust the financial information provided.
Reading a mutual fund’s annual report can initially seem complex, but a structured approach helps investors extract meaningful insights. Here’s how you can interpret it:
Annual reports in mutual funds provide a comprehensive overview of a fund’s performance, strategy, and financial health for the fiscal year. Sections of an Annual Report include the fund overview, message from the fund manager, portfolio holdings, and audited financial statements, offering transparency and accountability. These reports help investors assess a fund’s alignment with their goals by comparing performance against benchmarks, analysing risk-adjusted returns, and understanding costs through the expense ratio.
