Eligibility Criteria for an Education Loan in Tamil Nadu

Lenders in the state follow broadly similar criteria, with scheme-specific conditions on top.

  • The applicant must be an Indian national who has secured admission to a course, generally through an entrance test or merit-based selection.
  • A parent or guardian is required to join as a co-borrower, since the student alone is rarely treated as creditworthy at the time of application.
  • The course and institution should be recognised by the relevant regulatory or accreditation body.
  • Management quota admissions are excluded under PM-Vidyalaxmi and are considered on a case-by-case basis under other schemes.

Documents Required for an Education Loan in Tamil Nadu

The documents below are commonly requested, and the exact list can change with the scheme and education loan amount.

  • Identity and address evidence of the student and co-borrower on photos.
  • Institutional offer letter and fee schedule including tuition, hostel and other fees.
  • Mark Sheets of qualifying examinations and scorecards of tests like JEE, GRE or TOEFL, wherever applicable.
  • Salary Slips, Form 16 or income tax returns as well as bank statements of the co-borrower in the past few months.
  • Collateral documents like property title documents, should the loan go beyond the collateral-free limit.
  • Passport and visa details for international courses.

Margin and Collateral Across Tamil Nadu's Education Loan Lenders

Collateral and margin rules depend on the scheme, the institution category and the amount borrowed.

  • Under Vidya Turant, Canara Bank waives margin money, and the collateral-free limits follow the institution category at ₹50 lakh, ₹40 lakh and ₹30 lakh.
  • SBI does not require collateral for Student Loan amounts up to ₹7.5 lakh and certain institutions under Global Ed-Vantage are eligible for collateral-free loans up to ₹50 lakh.
  • Students admitted to one of ICICI Bank's 1,500+ premium institutes do not need to bring margin money, and the bank offers both secured and unsecured loans.
  • For identified premier institutes, Bank of Baroda waives collateral on loans up to ₹40 lakh.

How to Apply for an Education Loan in Tamil Nadu

The usual route is the same across lenders, although each bank has its own application channels.

  • Decide the lender and scheme after checking which institution category the college falls under.
  • Begin the application at a branch or online, or on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal where the institution is covered.
  • Submit the admission letter, fee structure and academic records, followed by the co-borrower's identity and income documents.
  • Complete the collateral formalities if the loan is above the unsecured limit.
  • On approval, the lender sends a sanction letter and pays the institution in stages in line with the fee schedule.

Repayment Tenure and Moratorium Period

Most of these lenders allow repayment over a period of up to 15 years. The moratorium usually covers the course period plus six months to one year, depending on the lender and the scheme, and the interest treatment during this period is stated in the loan terms. When the moratorium ends, equated monthly instalments begin, and anEducation Loan EMI Calculator helps estimate the instalment at different rates and tenures.

FAQs

  • Does Tamil Nadu have a state scheme for education loans?

The Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Economic Development Corporation (TABCEDCO) runs loan schemes for eligible students from backward classes, including higher education loans. Eligibility, interest rate and loan limits are decided by the corporation, so applicants should check with its district office.
  • Is collateral needed for an education loan in Tamil Nadu?

Not always. Canara Bank Vidya Turant offers collateral-free limits of ₹30 lakh to ₹50 lakh as per institution category. SBI Student Loan is collateral-free till ₹7.5 lakh. Bank of Baroda waives the collateral requirement up to ₹40 lakh at identified premier institutes.
  • Can Education Loan Insurance cover the outstanding amount if the student cannot repay?

Yes. If the student is unable to repay the loan, the co-borrower is liable for the same. Hence, many families prefer to take an Education Loan Insurance policy that covers the outstanding loan amount in case of any unforeseen event.
  • What is the interest rate on a Canara Bank education loan?

Canara Bank education loans available at 6.85% p.a. under the Vidya Turant scheme. This scheme is for studies in India only and not for studies abroad.
