How the HDFC Bank Education Loan Calculator Works

HDFC Bank calculates education loan interest on a reducing balance basis. This matters more than it sounds. Interest is charged on what you still owe, not on the original amount.

The calculator runs on the standard EMI formula.

EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N – 1]

Where:

  • EMI is the Equated Monthly Instalment
  • P is the principal, the amount you borrow
  • R is the monthly interest rate, worked out by dividing the annual rate by 12 and then by 100
  • N is the total number of monthly instalments across the tenure

The monthly conversion may be confusing. An annual rate of 10% does not go into the formula as 10. It becomes 0.10 divided by 12, which comes to 0.00833.

Steps to Calculate Your EMI

The four steps involve:

Step 1: Work out the loan amount you actually need, after deducting any margin money, scholarships or savings you are putting in.

Step 2: Convert the annual interest rate into a monthly figure by dividing it by 12 and then by 100.

Step 3: Multiply your repayment tenure in years by 12 to get the total number of instalments.

Step 4: Enter all three into the calculator and get an idea about the EMI, total interest and total repayment.

Factors Influencing Your HDFC Bank Education Loan EMI

Several factors affect the loan EMI.

  • Loan Amount: A bigger loan denotes a bigger EMI at the same rate and tenure.
  • Interest Rate: The rates offered by HDFC Bank during April 2026 to June 2026 were in the range of 9.30% to 11.70% p.a. with an average internal rate of return of 10.05%.
  • Secured or Unsecured: The interest rate that applies depends on whether the loan is backed by collateral. The actual difference depends on the loan, institution and borrower profile.
  • Tenure: The most important factor, i.e., longer tenure, smaller EMI, higher total cost.
  • Reducing Balance Method: Interest is calculated on the outstanding principal. A prepayment reduces the outstanding balance and can therefore reduce future interest, lower the EMI or shorten the repayment tenure.
  • Interest During Moratorium: Paying it during the moratorium keeps your principal from inflating. Skipping it makes every subsequent EMI larger.

Investors can also look at various investment options like child education plans, equity mutual funds, etc and build a substantial corpus to reduce the loan amount and EMIs as per their income and risk tolerance.

FAQs

  • Will a longer tenure make my loan cheaper?

No, it does the opposite. Your EMI drops but your total interest climbs. A shorter tenure means larger monthly payments and a meaningfully smaller total outgo, provided your income can absorb it.
  • Can I claim tax benefit on the interest I pay?

Yes. Under the Income-tax Act, 2025, eligible interest paid on a qualifying higher-education loan can be claimed as a deduction under Section 129. There is no separate monetary ceiling on the eligible interest deduction. The deduction is available for the initial tax year and seven succeeding tax years, or until the eligible interest is fully paid, whichever is earlier. This deduction is available under the old tax regime, subject to the applicable conditions.
  • Should I pay interest during the moratorium or wait?

Letting it accrue means it gets added to your principal, and you spend the rest of the loan paying interest on interest. Families who plan for this early often build a corpus through long-term instruments like mutual fund child plans to reduce their borrowing burden and excess interest.
  • How much should I borrow?

Every rupee funded from savings is a rupee you are not paying interest on for the next ten to fifteen years. Borrowing depends entirely on the requirements. Planning ahead with long-term investments such as children's gift funds may help build a corpus for future education expenses and potentially reduce the amount that needs to be borrowed.
