What is the Odisha Pension Scheme?

Madhu Babu Pension Yojna (MBPY) scheme, commonly known as the Odisha Pension Scheme, is introduced by the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in Odisha, India. 

District Municipal offices, Gram Panchayat Offices, and Secretariat in cities are responsible for providing and collecting the applications, and giving their allocated pension amount. 

Schemes Under Odisha Pension

Various schemes under Odisha Pension are created with the significant objective of helping economically backward people in Odisha. By allocating people to different categories, the government can easily provide pension benefits to everyone in need.

Various schemes provided under Odisha Pension are:

  1. Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension

    Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension is provided for old age people who are also known as senior citizens in society. Senior citizens who are living in Odisha and fall below the poverty line of the Nation are eligible to get this benefit.

    Any senior citizen whose descendants refused to take care of them is also eligible if they had no other source of income. The monthly rate provided to these beneficiaries is Rs. 500. People who are above the age of 60 are considered to be senior citizens. This pension can be provided to people until the age of 79.

    After the age of 79 (i.e.) 80, the pension is increased to Rs.700 per month. The beneficiary can receive this amount until the end of their life.

  2. Indira Gandhi National Disabled Pension

    Indira Gandhi National Disabled Pension is provided for physically challenged and mentally challenged people. Any other disabilities like chronic disease or inability to work due to any other physical and mental issues with a medical certificate issued by any recognized practitioners are eligible. 

    Under this Pension scheme, an amount of Rs. 500 is provided per month to the beneficiary. The disabled people must be people from below poverty line backgrounds. The age criteria for this scheme are 18 to 79 years.

  3. Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension

    Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension is provided for widows below the poverty line and are between the ages of 40 and 79. The amount provided for a widow under this scheme is Rs.500 per month.

    Widows must be registered legally regarding their marriage. Widows must provide the death certificate of their husbands while applying for this pension.

  4. National Family Benefit Scheme

    The National Family Benefit Pension is provided for families which fall under the poverty line. The total annual income of the family has to fall under Rs.24,000/- per annum. This National Family Benefit Scheme is provided for families in Odisha to spend on necessities, everyday expenses, and other emergency expenses like medical expenses.

    The family should not have any assets above the value of Rs.50,000/- are also eligible for taking this pension. This is one-time assistance in a year and is provided as relief assistance to people. 

    The one-time assistance of Rs. 20,000/- is provided for families that come under this scheme.

  • A widow irrespective of age (must be 18 years when married)
  • Leprosy patients with any sign of deformity of any age are eligible.
  • People who are unable to work due to blindness, handicapped, mentally retarded, or cerebral palsy.
  • A family's total income is less than Rs.24,000/- per annum is eligible.
  • AIDS patients with an identified certificate from doctors.

Beside categories mentioned above, they must also be permanent residents of Odisha for getting social security benefits from the Odisha Government.

  • Mentally challenged people
  • Physically challenged or Handicapped People
  • People with chronic disease and with no source of income
