Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs (UJALA) is a scheme initiated by the Indian government as a nationwide effort to save energy. The scheme was launched to motivate people in the country to make use of inexpensive LED bulbs instead of expensive and energy-inefficient lighting systems such as Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and Incandescent Lamps (ICL).
The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Ministry of Power-promoted company, launched the scheme in order to help reduce energy consumption bills and improve energy efficiency.
Term Plans
Launched on 5 January 2015, the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs (UJALA) programme is implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of public sector undertakings under the Government of India’s Ministry of Power.
Key features of the scheme include:
Encourages residential consumers to purchase LED bulbs that are both affordable and environmentally friendly.
Reducing peak electricity demand and greenhouse gas emissions.
It is a program that functions like a business that purchases products in bulk. This enables the selling of the LED bulbs at cheaper costs in India.
Helping India meet its long-term targets of energy efficiency and climate change.
Distributing millions of LED bulbs across the nation successfully, making it one of the largest domestic lighting schemes in the world.

A structured distribution model helps EESL run the UJALA scheme both efficiently and economically.
Bulk purchasing: LED bulbs are purchased through a process of open bidding, which minimises the cost of procurement to a great extent.
Network for Distribution: LED bulbs are distributed to the general public through authorised centres and camps which are set up under the project.
Household Adoption: People are willingly shifting from normal bulbs to LED bulbs, which in turn reduces their power consumption and increases energy efficiency.
Future savings: LED bulbs may be more expensive initially than the normal bulbs; however, the initial cost is recovered as these bulbs consume less power and last longer than regular bulbs.
The UJALA scheme is an initiative launched to benefit residential households and the country’s power sector in several ways.
Affordable LED Distribution: The scheme has given people access to LED lights at affordable prices.
Electricity Conservation: LED bulbs consume less electricity as compared to incandescent bulbs of equal luminous intensity.
Reduces Electricity Bills: Since LED bulbs use less energy, switching from traditional bulbs can save people money on electricity bills.
Environmental Advantages: The scheme reduces the pressure on power systems and provides energy efficiency in the country, thereby decreasing carbon dioxide emissions.
Quality-Assured Products: The UJALA scheme has resulted in the availability of good-quality LED lights which conform to prescribed norms and standards, leading to benefits for the customer like performance, durability and cost-effectiveness.
Citizens wishing to benefit from the UJALA scheme must fulfil certain compliance and eligibility criteria.
They should be domestic energy consumers with a metered connection.
They must carry a valid electricity bill or consumer number, where applicable.
They must comply with the guidelines specific to their own state or area of distribution.
The availability and distribution mechanisms may vary depending on the respective state government, local authority, or energy distribution agency that is implementing the plan.
The UJALA scheme is a major programme that has contributed to India’s efforts to conserve energy.
Its key achievements include:
In the process of the scheme implementation, more than 36.87 crore LED lights have been distributed in India.
Thanks to the scheme, annually up to 47,883 million kWh is saved in terms of energy consumption.
People save up to ₹19,153 crore every year on energy costs.
Peak power demand in the country has reduced by 9,586 MW due to UJALA.
Annual carbon emissions reduction reached 3.88 crore tonnes thanks to the scheme.
Due to the scheme’s bulk procurement process, the cost of LED lamps decreased from ₹300–350 in 2014 to ₹70. This makes energy-efficient lighting available to households.
The scheme has also led to LED production in the USA, improving energy efficiency due to mass LED light usage.
Indian citizens have modified their ways of lighting houses through the initiative taken by the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs (UJALA) scheme. Under this programme, they are provided with efficient LED lights at very affordable prices. This scheme has also assisted the nation in achieving its energy efficiency and sustainability targets.
