What is Namo Saraswati Yojana?

The scheme was announced by Gujarat's Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai during the state budget presentation on February 2, 2024, and was formally rolled out on March 9, 2024. The Education Department of Gujarat serves as the nodal authority responsible for its implementation. The core objective is simple: many meritorious girl students drop science after Class 10 due to financial constraints, even though they qualify academically. Namo Saraswati Yojana addresses this gap directly by rewarding their choice to continue in the science stream.

Consider a student from a small town in Banaskantha who scored 68% in her Class 10 boards and wanted to study science but hesitated because of tuition costs and study material expenses. With this scholarship covering a fixed monthly amount, families like hers get breathing room to focus on academics rather than affordability.

Scholarship Amount Breakdown for Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana

The financial assistance is structured to support students at both stages of higher secondary education:

  • Class 11: Rs. 1,000 per month for 10 months, totaling Rs. 10,000 for the year
  • Class 12: Rs. 1,000 per month for 10 months, totaling Rs. 10,000 for the year
  • Additional incentive: Rs. 5,000 released after the student successfully clears the Class 12 board examination

This brings the total benefit to Rs. 25,000 across the two-year period, disbursed directly into the student's or her mother's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Eligibility Criteria for Namo Saraswati Yojana

Before applying, students should check whether they meet the following conditions:

  • Must be a permanent resident of Gujarat
  • Should be a regular student enrolled in Class 11 or Class 12
  • Must have scored at least 50% marks in the Class 10 board examination
  • Should have opted for the science stream at the time of Class 11 admission
  • Annual family income should not exceed Rs. 6,00,000
  • Must be studying in a school recognized by GSHSEB or affiliated with CBSE, whether government, grant-in-aid, or self-financed

Documents Required for Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana

Schools generally collect the following documents while registering eligible students:

  • Aadhaar Card of the student
  • Aadhaar Card of parents
  • Bank passbook copy for DBT transfer
  • Income certificate confirming family earnings
  • Class 10 marksheet as proof of eligibility marks
  • Domicile or residence proof of Gujarat
  • Valid mobile number for communication

How the Application Process Works for Namo Saraswati Yojana

Unlike many scholarship schemes where students apply directly, Namo Saraswati Yojana follows a school-led registration model:

  • The school appoints a nodal officer responsible for the scheme
  • Eligible students are identified and registered on the Child Tracking System (CTS) portal under Vidya Samiksha Kendra
  • The nodal officer uploads the required documents on behalf of each student
  • The District Education Officer verifies the submitted applications
  • A final list of approved beneficiaries is prepared and forwarded to the Education Department
  • Scholarship amounts are credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account

Because the process runs through schools rather than an open student portal, applicants are encouraged to stay in regular contact with their school administration for updates, deadlines, and document submission timelines.

Why Namo Saraswati Yojana Scheme is Important

Gujarat has consistently seen fewer girls opting for science compared to boys at the higher secondary level, largely due to household financial pressure and the perception that science requires costlier resources like tuition, lab equipment, and study material. Namo Saraswati Yojana tackles this imbalance with a direct, income-linked incentive rather than a one-time grant, which keeps the support consistent through both academic years.

The scheme also complements Namo Lakshmi Yojana, another Gujarat initiative launched around the same time to support girls' education more broadly. Together, these programs reflect a sustained state-level push toward improving female participation in STEM education.

Conclusion

Namo Saraswati Yojana is a targeted, well-structured effort by the Gujarat Government to keep more girl students engaged in science education after Class 10. By offering staged financial support tied to academic continuation, the scheme reduces the economic burden that often pushes capable students away from science. Students and parents should coordinate closely with their school's nodal officer to ensure timely registration, accurate documentation, and smooth disbursement of funds.

FAQs

  • How can parents further secure their child's education besides government scholarships?

While Namo Saraswati Yojana helps cover science stream expenses for two years, parents often look at a child plan to build a larger education corpus for college and beyond. A child plan combines savings and insurance, ensuring funds are available for higher studies even if the parent is not around to provide for them.
  • How much scholarship amount do students receive?

Students receive Rs. 10,000 in Class 11, Rs. 10,000 in Class 12, and an additional Rs. 5,000 after passing the Class 12 board exam, totaling Rs. 25,000.
  • Can students apply directly for this scheme?

No. Applications are processed through schools. A nodal officer registers eligible students on the CTS portal, so students should approach their school administration instead of applying independently online.
  • How is the scholarship amount paid?

The amount is transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer, usually into the mother's bank account, or the student's account if required.
  • Is there a separate portal to check application status?

The scheme is managed through the Child Tracking System (CTS) portal linked to Vidya Samiksha Kendra, and schools are responsible for tracking and updating application status on behalf of students.
