How Does Bima Bharosa Work?

Bima Bharosa is the online portal of IRDAI for the redressal of insurance-related grievances. It enables policyholders to lodge complaints, track their progress, and seek additional help if the matter remains unresolved.

Here is a brief explanation

Once an account is registered and a complaint filed, the information are immediately sent on to the relevant insurance carrier to resolve the problem. A unique reference number is established which will enable the complainant to track the development of the case. If the insurer’s response is not satisfactory, the matter can be escalated to the IRDAI for further examination. The tool also promotes transparency by consolidating all information and communication related to the grievance in one place.

How to File a Complaint Through the Bima Bharosa Portal?

Step 1: Log in to your IRDAI Bima Bharosa Portal Account.

For New users, you will have to provide basic data to register first

Step 2: Click on “Register Grievance” and choose the option for filing a new complaint.

Step 3: Provide correct information regarding your policy number, insurer’s name and

specifics of the incident. This incident could be a case of life insurance mis-selling, fraud or misleading promises by an agent.

Step 4: Include any supporting documents relevant to the fraud complaint, such as policy papers, emails, messages, call records or any other evidence.

Step 5: Submit the complaint and keep the reference number provided to you. You can use this reference number to check the status of your complaints online.

When to File a Complaint?

In case the insurance company has not been fair to you or has not addressed policy issues, you can file a complaint via the Bima Bharosa platform.

  • Claim Delays or Denials: Complain when you feel your term insurance claim is denied or is still kept pending without any obvious reason.

  • No Response to Complaint: If the insurer fails to respond to your complaint or dispute within the prescribed time, then the policyholders can file a complaint on the Bima Bharosa platform.

  • Wrong policy information: If you were given wrong, incomplete or misleading information about your policy.

  • Insurance Policy Mis-selling: You were sold a policy that did not meet your needs, or an agent or insurer made false promises.

  • Unfair Costs or Practices: You observe the insurer's use of concealed terms, excessive charges, or any other form of unjust treatment.

After you file a complaint, it is sent to the relevant insurer for evaluation and resolution. You may check the status at the portal by entering your reference number. If you are not satisfied then you may take it up with the Insurance Ombudsman.

Wrapping It Up!

To address insurance-related complaints, Bima Bharosa offers an open forum supported by the relevant authorities. In this way, it helps ensure that policyholders' concerns are handled fairly and expediently.

Varun Agarwal IRDAI Certified Term Insurance Expert with 10+ Years of Experience

Varun has spent years in the insurance space, but what drives him isn't policies or premiums — it's the conversations he's had with real people. A young father in Pune wondering if his salary is enough. A newly married couple in Jaipur putting off "the insurance talk" for later. A mother in Chennai who never knew her husband was underinsured until it was too late.
These stories stay with him. As Head of Term Insurance at Policybazaar, Varun knows the numbers well — 52.4% of Indians are aware of term insurance, yet only 9.6% own it. And 87% of families don't realise they're leaving their loved ones with far less protection than they actually need. But behind every statistic, he sees a family that just needed someone to sit with them, explain it simply, and help them take that one step. That's exactly what Policybazaar's term insurance is built to do. In his words, "Most people aren't avoiding protection — they're just waiting for someone to make it easy. That's what we're here for."
