What is PUCC in Bike?

A Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate is a document that certifies your two-wheeler to be following and under the pollution rules. The Government of India (GOI) issues the certificate after testing the emission levels of the two-wheeler. You can get your two-wheeler tested to check the levels at any government authorized emission testing centers. Usually, these centers are located at petrol pumps in your city.

The PUC certificate contains some significant information such as-

  • The serial number of PUCC
  • PUC test validity date
  • Registration number of your bike/scooter
  • The date of the emission test

Importance of PUC for New Bikes

A PUC certificate for a new bike should be as per the Motor Vehicle Act. The validity of PUCC for new bikes stands at 1 year. Once it crosses that period, the PUC certificate is renewed for a validity of 6 months.

You can refer to the below reasons why you should obtain a PUCC for a new bike-

  • As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, it is mandatory to carry a PUC certificate while riding a two-wheeler on the roads
  • Moreover, as per the IRDAI, the bike insurance renewal demands an updated PUC certificate from the policyholder.

Why is The PUC Test Necessary?

It is mandatory to get your two-wheeler emission level tested and carry the PUC certificate with you every time you are riding on the road. Omitting to carry the document would lead to a submit a heavy fine.

Now, the question is 'why is it mandatory for all two-wheeler to undergo the PUC test'?

Two-wheelers are one of the major pollution contributors in the past two decades. They produce a significant amount of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbon, and various other pollutants. Thus, this PUC test will track the health of your two-wheeler.

How Can You Get a PUC Certificate for Your Bike?

Follow the below-mentioned steps to obtain PUC certificate for a new bike-

  • If the vehicle is new, then your bike dealership will arrange the PUCC for it
  • If your bike is old, find an authorized emission testing center in your city. Usually, it is available at petrol pumps or you can check a licensed RTO-approved PUC center online by visiting the Parivahan platform
  • Once you find the PUC center, take your two-wheeler there and get it tested by the mechanic. They will insert the emission testing tube into the exhaust pipe of the bike to check the emission levels
  • Next, a PUC certificate of your vehicle will be generated electronically, and you have to pay a nominal fee to issue it.

Cost of PUC Certificate

To issue a PUC certificate, you have to pay a nominal fee that varies from Rs 60-100/-

However, it might differ from vehicle to vehicle depending on the fuel type.

What is the Validity Period of a PUC Certificate?

When you will buy a two-wheeler the bike dealership will provide you with the PUC certificate. That certificate is valid only for 1 year. After that, you must renew it at any authorized emission testing center. The PUCC issued from the emission center is valid for 6 months. Hence, you are required to renew your PUC certificate after every 6 months.

Benefits of Having a Valid PUC Certificate

The PUC certificate is similarly essential for you to carry as is your DL, bike insurance policy, and RC of the vehicle. Here are a few benefits associated with having an active PUCC-

· Protects The Environment

The real picture of the global environment is in front of everyone and a small contribution to this is pollution. Carrying a PUC certificate along with your two-wheeler insurance reflects that you care for the environment. Therefore, as a responsible citizen, take a test of your two-wheeler for checking the pollution eminent levels and ensure that it follows the permitted emission levels.

· Awareness of Your Vehicle's Condition

If you will check the health of your vehicle, you will stay aware of its fluctuating pollution levels. You can take it for servicing at regular intervals. If you notice a higher level of pollution emission, get it checked instantly with the mechanic to avoid any further issues. The regular check-up, testing, and updating of the PUC certificate will help you maintain the condition of your two-wheeler.

· Law Abiding Citizen

Carrying a PUC certificate makes you a law-abiding citizen. Following the rules set by the Government of India makes you avoid penalties that may incur if you do not obey them.

· PUC is Compulsory for Bike Insurance Renewal
