As per a release issued by the IRDAI, the insurance regulator has said that both general and health insurance companies will cover the treatment cost of the omicron COVID variant if they provide coverage for coronavirus under their health insurance plans. The coverage will be provided as per the terms and conditions of the plan.
The regulation applies to both indemnity-based health insurance plans covering COVID-19 hospitalization and specific coronavirus health insurance plans.
The IRDAI has also asked health insurance providers to establish better coordination with their network hospitals and healthcare service providers. This will enable policyholders diagnosed with the omicron COVID variant to access cashless hospitalization facilities without any hassles and will also ensure them speedy services.
So far, India has detected 1892 cases of omicron virus across 23 states and union territories. The maximum omicron cases of 568 have been detected in Maharashtra, followed by Delhi and Kerala with 382 and 185 cases respectively.
