Is ₹5 Lakh Health Insurance Enough? One Critical Illness Could Prove Otherwise

Imagine a family member has a severe heart attack, or meets with a major accident and is rushed to a private hospital in a tier-1 city. He needs ICU admission and ventilator support. At roughly ₹50,000 a day, 6 days of intensive care would cost ₹3 lakh. That leaves only ₹2 lakh of your ₹5 lakh cover for other expenses, including the surgery and post-operative care, and the final bill can easily exceed your limit. When your ₹5 lakh cover runs out while treatment is still underway, who pays the balance? You do.

How Does 5 Lakh Health Insurance Work?

Here is how your ₹5 lakh health insurance will work during hospitalisation, depending on your situation:

Scenario 1: Hospital Bill Comes to ₹2 Lakh

Let's start with the simple one. You are hospitalised for an illness that your policy covers, there is no co-pay clause and the entire ₹2 lakh bill is admissible. The settlement would look like this:

      Particulars Amount
      Hospital bill ₹2 lakh
      Insurance coverage ₹5 lakh
      Claim settlement amount ₹2 lakh
      Sum insured left ₹3 lakh

The insurer clears the full amount and you don't pay anything at discharge. The balance ₹3 lakh can be used for any other hospitalisation till the policy renews.

Scenario 2: Hospital Bill Comes to ₹4 Lakh

Now take a ₹4 lakh bill in which ₹10,000 has gone on consumables like gloves, masks and syringes. Most health policies do not pay for consumables, so the insurer deducts this amount from the claim.

      Particulars Amount
      Hospital bill ₹4 lakh
      Consumables (not payable) ₹10,000
      Insurer pays ₹3.9 lakh
      You pay ₹10,000
      Sum insured left ₹5 lakh - ₹3.9 lakh = ₹1.1 lakh

So a single hospital stay has used up 78% of your annual cover. If you or anyone else on the policy is admitted again in the same policy year, only ₹1.1 lakh will be available.

Scenario 3: Hospital Bill Comes to ₹7 Lakh

In this case the hospital bill comes to ₹7 lakh, but you are insured for ₹5 lakh only. This is how your coverage will work:

      Particulars Amount
      Hospital bill ₹7 lakh
      Admissible claim ₹5 lakh
      Sum insured left ₹0
      Out-of-pocket ₹2 lakh

The policy pays up to the sum insured and not more, even if the whole ₹7 lakh is admissible. You will have to arrange the remaining ₹2 lakh on your own, either from savings or by borrowing.

Situations Where ₹5 Lakh Health Insurance Might Not Be Enough

      1. One Expensive/Prolonged Hospitalisation

It takes just one serious hospitalisation to use up a ₹5 lakh policy. Cardiac surgery or stroke management in a good private hospital can go up to ₹10 lakh, which leaves you to arrange the shortfall. Over and above this there are ICU charges, physiotherapy, medicines and nursing, plus the non-payable items that the insurer will deduct anyway.

      2. Multiple Hospitalisations

People rarely fall sick only once. If someone in the family has a chronic illness like chronic kidney disease or cancer, they may need to be admitted again and again, and one surgery or one long admission can exhaust the ₹5 lakh. Once used, the sum insured does not come back during the year unless your plan has a restoration benefit. It gets refilled only when the policy is renewed.

      3. Multiple Insured Family Members

In a family health insurance plan, the ₹5 lakh is shared by everybody on the policy. Suppose your wife's surgery uses ₹3 lakh in the first few months, then you, your kids and anyone else covered will have to manage with ₹2 lakh for the rest of the year. If your parents or members with existing illnesses are on the same floater, the money is even more likely to run out before renewal.

      4. Treatment in Higher-Cost Cities

Hospital costs are not the same everywhere, and this is why insurers price their policies by zones. Generally zone 1 is the expensive tier-1 cities and zone 3 is the smaller tier-3 towns. As per the NSS 75th round survey, an average stay in a private hospital cost ₹38,822 in urban areas against ₹27,347 in rural areas. If you live in a metro, or are likely to get treated in one, plan for a higher cover.

      5. Increasing Hospital Bills

Medical inflation in India has been in double digits for some time now. If costs go up by 12% a year, a treatment that costs ₹5 lakh today will cost about ₹8.8 lakh in 5 years and roughly ₹15.5 lakh in 10 years. A sum insured that stays at ₹5 lakh will cover a smaller part of the bill every year.

The table below shows how the cost of 7 common surgeries in India may go up:

Surgery/procedure Estimated cost today After 5 years After 10 years After 15 years
Heart bypass (CABG) ₹2.5-5.5 lakh ₹4.4-9.7 lakh ₹7.8-17.1 lakh ₹13.7-30.1 lakh
Knee replacement ₹2.5-4.5 lakh ₹4.4-7.9 lakh ₹7.8-14.0 lakh ₹13.7-24.6 lakh
        Angioplasty ₹1.8-3.5 lakh ₹3.2-6.2 lakh ₹5.6-10.9 lakh ₹9.9-19.2 lakh
Gallbladder removal ₹0.55-1.2 lakh ₹1.0-2.1 lakh ₹1.7-3.7 lakh ₹3.0-6.6 lakh
Appendix surgery ₹0.5-1.2 lakh ₹0.9-2.1 lakh ₹1.6-3.7 lakh ₹2.7-6.6 lakh
Cataract surgery ₹0.25-0.7 lakh ₹0.4-1.2 lakh ₹0.8-2.2 lakh ₹1.4-3.8 lakh
Kidney stone removal ₹0.3-1.3 lakh ₹0.5-2.3 lakh ₹0.9-4.0 lakh ₹1.6-7.1 lakh

Disclaimer: These are indicative cost ranges, not fixed hospital rates

      6. Who Might Find ₹5 Lakh Adequate and Who May Need More?

₹5 lakh can be enough for some people and quite short for others. It mostly depends on your age, family and where you live:

Situation What ₹5 lakh could mean Adequate or not
Young adult (single, under 30) A basic entry-level starting plan Adequate
Couples/newlyweds Shared floater or dual individual cover Inadequate
Family floater (parents + children) Single pool for multiple members Highly inadequate
Ageing parents/senior citizens Coverage against age-related health risks Inadequate
Metro/tier-1 city residents Buffer against local hospitalisation costs Inadequate
Salaried professionals with corporate cover Secondary top-up layer Adequate (as a backup)

Ways to Boost Your Health Cover Beyond ₹5 Lakh

If ₹5 lakh feels too low for your family, you can increase your health insurance cover in two ways:

Option 1: Increase Your Base Sum Insured

You can increase the base cover to ₹10 lakh, ₹15 lakh, ₹20 lakh or even ₹25 lakh at the time of renewal.

Why do it? Bigger hospital bills get paid directly by your main policy, and there is no deductible to cross first.

      Option 2: Add a Top-Up/Super Top-Up Plan

The other way is to buy a super top-up plan on top of your base policy. A super top-up starts paying when your total hospital bills in a policy year go past a fixed limit, which is called the deductible.

      How it works:

      • Base plan: ₹5 lakh
      • Super top-up plan: ₹25 lakh (begins after ₹5 lakh is over)
      • Total hospital bill: ₹15 lakh

      Payment breakdown:

      • First ₹5 lakh: covered by your base policy
      • Remaining ₹10 lakh: paid completely by the super top-up plan

So, How Much Health Insurance Is Actually Enough?

There isn't a fixed amount of health cover that works for everybody. Your age, family size, city, the network hospitals you prefer, medical history and future health needs will decide it. For a young person without major health issues, a ₹5 lakh plan is fine to begin with.

If there is a chance of long hospital stays or ICU/NICU admissions in your family, ₹15 lakh should be the minimum base sum insured.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      • Q1. Is ₹5 lakh health insurance enough?

Ans: ₹5 lakh can work as a starting cover for young people who have low medical needs and no dependents. For most others it is not sufficient, particularly if you already have a serious illness or are past your 20s.
      • Q2. Is ₹5 lakh health insurance enough for a family?

Ans: No. In a family floater all members share the same ₹5 lakh, so one big claim by one person can leave very little for everyone else.
      • Q3. What happens if my hospital bill is more than ₹5 lakh?

Ans: Anything above the ₹5 lakh sum insured has to be paid by you. For example, if the bill is ₹7 lakh and the admissible amount is ₹5 lakh, you will pay the shortfall of ₹2 lakh from your pocket.
      • Q4. Does a ₹5 lakh policy cover the entire ₹5 lakh hospital bill?

Ans: Not necessarily. The insurer pays only the admissible expenses as per your policy terms. Non-payable items, exclusions, co-payments, deductibles and sub-limits can all reduce the final claim amount.
      • Q5. Is ₹10 lakh health insurance better than ₹5 lakh?

Ans: Yes, ₹10 lakh gives you much wider protection against medical bills. While comparing plans, also look at exclusions, sub-limits, co-pays and other features, and not just the sum insured.
      • Q6. What is a super top-up health insurance policy?

Ans: A super top-up is an extra layer of cover over your base health policy. It pays once your eligible medical expenses in a policy year cross the deductible, as per the policy terms.
      • Q7. How to increase ₹5 lakh health insurance to ₹10 lakh?

Ans: You can request your insurer to increase the sum insured from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh, usually at renewal. The insurer may check your health details before approving it, and the extra ₹5 lakh will come with a fresh waiting period.
      • Q8. How much is good for health insurance?

Ans: It differs from person to person. Age, family size, city, healthcare costs, preferred hospitals, employer cover, medical history, budget and expected needs all play a role. ₹15 lakh is a reasonable baseline for most people. Young adults can start lower, while growing families and senior citizens should opt for a higher sum insured.
