The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is a Government of India initiative launched in 2000 to improve road connectivity in rural areas. The PMGSY full form is Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, and the PMGSY scheme aims to provide all-weather roads to eligible villages, making travel safer and improving access to education, healthcare, markets, and other essential services.
Today, the PM Gram Sadak Yojana remains one of India's key rural infrastructure programmes.
The PM Gram Sadak Yojana is implemented by state governments and union territories under the administration of the central government. The scheme is designed for the construction of new roads and the upgradation of existing rural roads to meet the prescribed technical standards.

Massive Road Network: Under the PMGSY scheme, more than 7.8 lakh km of rural roads have been completed, connecting thousands of villages with reliable all-weather roads.
Boost to Rural Economy: Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojana has improved access to markets, reduced transportation costs, and made it easier for farmers to sell their produce, creating more employment opportunities.
Better Access to Essential Services: The PM Gram Sadak Yojana has made schools, hospitals, and other public services more accessible, contributing to better education and healthcare outcomes in rural areas.

PMGSY-I: The first phase of the PMGSY scheme focused on providing all-weather road connectivity to eligible unconnected rural habitations across India.
PMGSY-II: This phase emphasised upgrading and improving existing rural roads to create a stronger and more reliable road network.
PMGSY-III: Under Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojana, priority is being given to roads that connect villages with agricultural markets, higher secondary schools, and hospitals. The government has extended the implementation period to March 2027.
PMGSY-IV: Announced in the Union Budget, this latest phase of PM Gram Sadak Yojana aims to provide all-weather road connectivity to 25,000 additional rural habitations, further strengthening rural infrastructure and accessibility.
PMGSY full form is PM Gram Sadak Yojana. It is a government programme that the Ministry of Rural Development implements to extend the all-weather road infrastructure to isolated rural areas. The authorities identify the areas that are isolated based on population density and carry out the implementation under the guidelines. After the roads are laid, the management and maintenance are also taken care of under the guidelines.
