As per the latest announcement, IRDAI has ordered all general and standalone health insurance providers to extend the timelines for the sale or renewal of all COVID-specific short-term health insurance policies, which includes Corona Kavach plans and Corona Rakshak plans, until September 30, 2022.
The regulator also clarified that all terms and conditions of these health plans will remain valid as per the guidelines.
At the time of launch in June 2020, these two short-term health insurance plans were to be sold until March 2021. However, keeping in mind the recent waves of the coronavirus, the IRDAI has extended the sale and renewal timeline until September 30, 2022.
In the Corona Kavach policy, coverage for hospitalisation expenses for the treatment of COVID-19 will be offered if tested positive at an authorized government diagnostic centre. This indemnity-based policy also provides coverage for the expenses incurred on PPE kits, ventilator charges, doctor's consultation fees, etc.
On the other hand, the Corona Rakshak policy provides 100% of the sum insured in case the insured is hospitalized for a minimum continuous duration of 72 hours upon the diagnosis of COVID-19.
