Janani Suraksha Yojana provides cash assistance to pregnant women to help cover delivery expenses. The amount varies depending on the type of delivery:
Institutional Delivery: This receives a higher incentive, typically around Rs. 600.
Home Delivery: While still encouraged to deliver at a healthcare facility, women opting for home birth receive a lower incentive, around Rs. 500.

Birth Limit: The scheme provides cash assistance for up to the first two live births.
Focus on Low-Performing States: The initiative focuses on states with lower rates of institutional deliveries and aims to improve those statistics.
Financial Disincentive for Home Deliveries: The lower cash incentive for home births nudges women towards opting for the safer option of a hospital delivery.
Improved Healthcare Access: Janani Suraksha Yojana indirectly promotes access to qualified medical professionals and better facilities available at healthcare institutions.
Community Outreach: Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are important links between the government and pregnant women in communities.
Registration and Awareness: ASHAs help women register for JSY, explain the benefits, and encourage them to use healthcare facilities for delivery.
Improved Maternal Health: By promoting institutional deliveries, JSY aims to reduce maternal mortality rates associated with complications during childbirth.
Safer Births for Newborns: Institutional deliveries with qualified medical professionals can also lead to better newborn health outcomes.
