Is Down Syndrome Covered by Health Insurance Plans in India?

      Yes.

Health insurance plans in India provide coverage for Down Syndrome. A couple of health plans like Bajaj Allianz Women Specific Critical Illness and Care Joy Maternity Insurance provide medical insurance for a Down Syndrome child in India. It covers the treatment cost of a baby born with Down Syndrome, provided the child survives for 30 days after diagnosis.

However, most health insurance plans in India do not provide coverage for Down Syndrome. This is because Down Syndrome is a type of external congenital disease and as per Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India (IRDAI) guidelines, external congenital diseases are a permanent exclusion.

Moreover, the cost of certain treatments and therapies required to treat the effects of Down Syndrome may also be covered under some health insurance plans. For example, if a Down Syndrome child is facing challenges in speaking, speech therapies can be provided. In such a case, the cost of speech therapies may be covered by a few health insurance plans in India.

Similarly, the treatment cost of leukaemia and Alzheimer’s resulting from Down Syndrome may be covered by some health plans in India. However, it is always better to check with your insurance company if they offer coverage for Down Syndrome or any treatment/therapies used to treat its symptoms.

In case your health insurance policy covers the treatment cost of Down Syndrome, make sure to check for any applicable waiting period before raising a claim. This is because Down Syndrome is present from birth and hence, can be considered as a pre-existing disease.
