When Can You Increase Your Health Insurance Coverage Amount?

You can increase your health insurance coverage amount at the time of policy renewal. All insurance companies allow you to change your sum insured while renewing the policy, provided you inform them on time. However, increasing your policy sum insured may lead to an increase in your premiums.

5 Ways to Increase Your Health Insurance Coverage Amount

Here are 5 ways to increase the sum insured of your mediclaim policy:

      1. Request a Higher Sum Insured

You can request your insurer to increase the sum insured of your health insurance policy at the time of renewal. If approved, you may have to pay an additional health insurance premium. However, the insurer will assess your current health condition and follow their internal underwriting guidelines before increasing the premium. Moreover, you will have to serve the waiting period for the additional coverage amount.

In case your request for the sum insured enhancement is declined, your current policy will continue with the same sum insured.

      2. Buy a New Health Insurance Policy

If your current medical insurance does not offer enough coverage, you can choose to discontinue it and buy a new plan with a higher sum insured. However, accepting your proposal for the new policy is at the discretion of the insurance company. Besides, if you have any pre-existing disease or already made claims under your current policy, the new insurer may be hesitant to offer you a high coverage amount. In case they do, you will need to serve the waiting period for the additional coverage amount.

      3. Purchase a Top-Up or Super Top-Up Plan

A cost-effective way to increase your medical coverage amount is by continuing your existing policy and purchasing a top-up or super top-up health insurance plan. These plans cover your medical expenses for an affordable premium in case your existing sum insured is exhausted. However, top-up plans come with a mandatory deductible that you need to pay before raising a claim.

For example, if you have a medical insurance policy with a sum insured of ₹5 lakh and you buy a top-up plan of ₹25 lakh with a ₹5 lakh deductible, you need to pay medical expenses of ₹5 lakh to file a claim under your top-up insurance policy.

      4. Consider Adding Riders or Add-ons

You can increase the overall value of your health policy by adding health insurance riders or add-on covers like critical illness cover, hospital cash allowance, maternity cover, OPD cover, personal accident cover, etc., by paying an additional premium. They do not increase the base sum insured but will offer additional financial support during specific situations, which will reduce the burden on your base policy.

      5. Build Your Cumulative Bonus

You can increase your coverage amount by maintaining a claim-free record and earning a cumulative bonus under your health insurance policy. The cumulative bonus increases your sum insured by a fixed percentage every claim-free year at no additional cost. Over the years, this bonus can significantly boost your total coverage amount, helping you claim more medical expenses without having to upgrade your policy.

      FAQs

      • Q1. Can I increase my health insurance amount?

Ans: Yes, you can increase your health insurance coverage amount. Most insurance companies allow policyholders to enhance their sum insured at the time of renewal. You can also buy top-up or super top-up plans, opt for add-on covers, or even port your policy to another insurer offering higher coverage.
      • Q2. Can I increase the sum insured in health insurance on renewal?

Ans: Yes, you can request an increase in the sum insured of your health insurance policy at the time of renewal. The insurer will review your health condition and claim history before accepting your request. If approved, you will continue to receive the benefits of your existing policy with an increased coverage amount.
      • Q3. What is the maximum amount of health insurance?

Ans: There is no fixed limit on the maximum health insurance amount. Several insurers offer health plans with a sum insured going up to ₹1 crore or more. However, you can usually opt for a sum insured amount depending on your income, age, health conditions, and the insurer’s underwriting rules.
