What is Balika Samriddhi Yojana?

The Balika Samriddhi Yojana was launched to push back against the discrimination that girl children faced in poor households. Families often saw daughters as financial burdens. This scheme was built to change that by attaching real money to her birth and continued education.

Highlights:

  • A one-time birth grant of Rs. 500 is given when a girl is born into a BPL family
  • From Class I to Class X, an annual scholarship is credited to her account every year
  • The money stays untouched until she turns 18
  • If she is unmarried at 18, she receives the full accumulated amount
  • The scheme covers both rural and urban BPL families

What the Balika Samriddhi Yojana Calculator Does

  • It removes the need to manually add scholarship figures year after year
  • It shows how much has already been credited based on the class the girl is currently in
  • It projects the remaining amount she will receive if she studies up to Class X
  • Some versions also apply an interest rate to show an approximate maturity value
  • It helps families plan around a realistic number rather than a rough guess

It is not a legally binding figure. But for a household where every financial decision is made carefully, having this estimate matters.

How to Use the Balika Samriddhi Yojana Calculator

  • Enter the year or date of birth of the girl child
  • Enter the class she is currently studying in
  • The calculator displays the scholarship credited for each class and the cumulative total
  • If the tool has an interest estimator, it will also show an approximate maturity amount
  • For exact figures, visit the post office or nationalized bank where the BSY account is held
  • Bank or post office staff can provide the actual credited amount, interest earned, and final projection

The Scholarship Breakdown by Class

The scholarship is not a fixed amount. It increases as the girl moves to higher classes:

Class Annual Scholarship
Class I, II, III Rs. 300 per year each
Class IV Rs. 500
Class V Rs. 600
Class VI, VII Rs. 700 per year each
Class VIII Rs. 800
Class IX, X Rs. 1,000 per year each
  • Total scholarship from Class I to X adds up to Rs. 9,200
  • Add the birth grant of Rs. 500, and the pre-interest total is Rs. 9,700
  • This figure grows further depending on where the account is held and for how long

Who Can Apply for the Balika Samriddhi Yojana Scheme?

Check each condition before applying:

  • The girl must have been born on or after 15 August 1997
  • The family must hold a valid BPL certificate
  • Only two girl children per family are covered, even if there are more daughters
  • The girl must remain unmarried until age 18 to withdraw the funds
  • Both rural and urban BPL families are eligible

The two-child cap is a detail many families miss. A third daughter in the same household does not qualify, regardless of the situation.

How to Apply for the Balika Samriddhi Yojana Scheme?

  1. In rural areas:

    • Contact the local ICDS anganwadi worker
    • Submit the application through them
  2. In urban areas:

    • Approach the designated health functionary in your area

Where to Find the Calculator

  • Ministry of Women and Child Development official website
  • State government portals under the Women and Child Development department
  • Post office branches that handle BSY accounts
  • Nationalized banks where BSY accounts are maintained

For families not comfortable with online tools, any post office or bank with a BSY account can do the calculation manually and give a written estimate on request.

What the Balika Samriddhi Yojana Calculator Does Not Tell You

  • The scholarship figures have not been revised in years and do not reflect current education costs
  • Rs. 1,000 per year for Classes IX and X does not go very far today
  • The calculator does not reflect delays in disbursement that have occurred in several states
  • Interest rates vary depending on the institution, so the maturity amount shown may differ from the actual payout
  • Treat it as a planning estimate, not a confirmed figure

Conclusion

Balika Samriddhi Yojana is a scheme with real value for BPL families when used as intended. The calculator helps families stay informed about what is coming to them, which leads to better decisions about their daughter's schooling. Keep her enrollment records current, maintain the account without gaps, and use the calculator periodically to track the accumulated amount. The figures are modest by today's standards, but for a girl from a poor household, this is a financial foundation that belongs to her alone.

FAQs

  • Can I use the calculator if my daughter has already completed some classes?

Yes, the calculator works mid-scheme as well. Enter her current class, and it will show credits so far and the remaining amount through Class X
  • Is Balika Samriddhi Yojana the same as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?

No, they are separate schemes. The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana came later and targets a broader group with higher returns. BSY specifically targets BPL families and ties disbursement to school enrollment
  • Is proof of school enrollment required every year to receive the scholarship?

Yes, annual disbursement is linked to continued school attendance. Enrollment proof must be submitted through the anganwadi worker or health functionary each year. Missing this step can result in a gap in scholarship credits for that year
