Postal Life Insurance was started in 1884 to offer insurance coverage at affordable premiums to the employees of the postal department. It was the first insurer in the country to extend coverage to female employees. Over time, its policies were offered to employees engaged in nearly every sector. PLI’s current insurance schemes include whole life insurance, endowment-based life insurance, joint life insurance, and child insurance. In 1995, PLI extended its coverage to the rural population of India to provide insurance benefits to the lower income strata of the society.
