A Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) is issued to a vehicle when its emissions are within the permitted limits. This certificate must be kept in the vehicle at all times while driving in India. To make PUC testing more accessible, the central government has advised state governments to set up PUC centres at fuel stations, mandate pre-payment of PUC fees, conduct regular machine calibration, carry out random checks, and take strict action against non-compliant centres.
You can access your PUC certificate online only after the vehicle has been tested at an authorised centre. Since the vehicle test cannot be done online, you will have to visit the centre with your vehicle.
To get a pollution certificate in Jharkhand, follow the process below.
The following emission tests are conducted based on the vehicle type in Jharkhand for issuing a pollution certificate:
| Fuel Type | Emission Test |
| Petrol | Tests are performed to check the level of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons emitted by the vehicle. |
| Diesel | A smoke density test is performed to check the black smoke emitted by the vehicles. |
| LPG/CNG | Tests are conducted to check the level of carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide emitted by the vehicle. A test is also conducted to check whether leaks would lead to higher emissions. |
Once your vehicle passes the emission test, the PUC certificate can be downloaded in just a few minutes using the following steps:.
The validity of a PUCC is mentioned on the document itself, and it is usually valid for 1 year. Alternatively, you can use the PUC Parivahan portal to download your certificate and check its expiry date. After expiry, a grace period of 7 days is usually offered to renew your certificate.
PUC is not required for electric and new vehicles that have not completed one year of registration.
For BS-VI vehicles, the PUCC in Jharkhand is valid for 12 months.
If you have a fuel-operated vehicle and 1 year has passed since its initial registration, you must get a PUC certificate.
There is no late fee for obtaining a PUC certificate. You must pay the regular charges.
A PUCC is an essential document because it is mandatory per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. It is also crucial for buying vehicle insurance and for contributing to curbing air pollution.
If PUC is not renewed in Jharkhand, a fine of Rs. 1000 is levied for the first offence, which increases to Rs. 2000 for repeated violations. You may also face a suspension of your driving licence for 3 months and imprisonment of up to 6 months.
If you lost your PUCC, download it again using the PUC Parivahan portal. Otherwise, you can take your vehicle to a testing centre and obtain a new document.
