      What is Stroke?

Stroke, also known as brain stroke, occurs when a part of the human brain does not receive enough blood supply and stops working. It happens when the blood vessels carrying oxygen are ruptured/damaged or the blood supply to the brain is blocked due to blood clots. A brain stroke is a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate medical treatment.

Strokes are categorized as Ischemic stroke and Haemorrhagic stroke. While a blocked artery causes ischemic stroke, a haemorrhagic stroke is caused due to the leaking or bursting of blood vessels in the brain. Although ischemic strokes are more common, haemorrhagic strokes can lead to death.

      Symptoms of Brain Stroke

Some of the primary symptoms of a brain stroke are as follows:

      • Difficulty in speaking or loss of speaking ability
      • Total/partial Paralysis
      • Visibility problems
      • Droopy face or loss of muscle on one side of the face
      • Seizures
      • Confusion or agitation
      • Slurred or garbled speaking
      • Sudden partial or total loss of one or more senses
      • Nausea and vomiting
      • Loss of coordination or clumsiness
      • Dizziness or fainting
      • Neck stiffness
      • Sudden and severe headaches
      • Coma
      • Memory loss

Who Should Buy Stroke Health Insurance?

Anyone at any age can get a brain stroke. However, a stroke insurance policy must be purchased by people with:

      • High blood pressure/ hypertension
      • High cholesterol
      • Diabetes
      • History of heart attack or irregular heart rhythms
      • Family history of stroke
      • Smoking habits
      • Lack of physical activity
      • Poor diet

Benefits of Buying Health Insurance for Stroke Patients

Here are some of the key reasons to buy health insurance for stroke patients:

      1. High Prevalence of Stroke in India

Strokes are extremely common in India. According to a Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) report, India has the highest incidence of stroke cases in the world, out of which 31% are reported among children below 20 years. Moreover, it is the fourth most common cause of death in the country. Given the scenario, buying a health insurance policy for stroke patients becomes prudent to stay financially prepared for any stroke-related medical expenses in future.

      2. Comprehensive Coverage for Stroke

Stroke is a critical illness that requires timely medical intervention treatment. The expenditure of the treatment, hospital charges doctor’s fees, etc. can easily clear out all your savings. Besides, strokes may lead to adverse symptoms, requiring regular medical attention and adding to your medical bills. Purchasing a critical illness insurance policy can make your battle with the disease easier as you will not have to spend out of your pocket but will receive a lump sum benefit from your insurer.
