Term Plans
A critical illness can lead to significant financial challenges due to treatment expenses, recovery costs, and a possible loss of income. The ABSLI Critical Illness Rider is designed to provide an additional financial cushion by offering a lump sum payout upon the diagnosis of a covered critical illness, subject to the rider terms and conditions.
This benefit can be used for medical treatment, lifestyle expenses, or any other financial responsibility during a difficult time.

ABSLI Critical Illness Rider is a non-linked, non-participating health rider that can be added to eligible Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance policies by paying an additional premium.
Under this rider, the life insured receives a lump sum benefit on the first diagnosis of a covered critical illness that meets the policy definitions and conditions. Once the rider benefit is paid, the critical illness cover under the rider terminates.
*Note: Terminal illness meaning – It is such an illness that cannot be cured and is likely fatal.

The ABSLI Critical Illness Rider covers multiple specified critical illnesses as defined under the rider terms. The complete list of covered diseases, medical definitions, and severity conditions should be referred to in the official ABSLI Critical Illness Rider brochure and policy document.
Some major categories of illnesses covered include:
Cancer-related conditions
Heart and cardiovascular conditions
Brain and neurological disorders
Organ failure and transplant-related illnesses
Blood and immune-related disorders
Respiratory and other serious medical conditions
The critical illness benefit is payable only when the diagnosed condition satisfies the exact medical definition and severity criteria mentioned under the rider.
The premium for the ABSLI Critical Illness Rider depends on several factors:
| Factor | Impact on Premium |
| Age at entry | Premium generally increases with age due to higher health risks |
| Rider sum assured | Higher critical illness coverage results in a higher premium |
| Rider term | The duration of protection affects the premium payable |
| Health profile | Existing medical conditions and underwriting assessment may impact pricing |
| Lifestyle factors | Habits such as smoking may lead to a higher premium |
The exact rider premium can be determined through an ABSLI premium illustration based on the selected plan, age, and coverage amount.
The ABSLI Critical Illness Rider can be added to eligible base plans, subject to the insurer’s underwriting guidelines and rider conditions.
The exact eligibility criteria, entry age, maturity age, rider term, and sum assured limits should be checked in the policy document and rider terms.
The rider provides a one-time lump sum payout upon the first diagnosis of a covered critical illness, provided all rider conditions are satisfied.
The claim amount is not linked to actual hospital bills and can be used as per the policyholder’s needs, including treatment costs, recovery expenses, loan repayments, or maintaining household finances.
Once a valid critical illness claim is paid, the rider benefit terminates.
A waiting period of 90 days applies from the rider effective date or the latest revival date, whichever is later. No critical illness benefit is payable for illnesses diagnosed during this waiting period.
The ABSLI Critical Illness Rider does not provide benefits for certain situations, including:
Pre-existing diseases, illnesses, or injuries that existed before the rider effective date or latest revival date
Conditions diagnosed within the 90-day waiting period
Congenital conditions
Sexually transmitted diseases
Attempted suicide or self-inflicted injuries
Participation in criminal or illegal activities
Consumption of alcohol, drugs, narcotics, or poisonous substances unless prescribed by a registered medical practitioner
Participation in hazardous sports such as mountaineering, parachuting, racing, or underwater activities
War, terrorism, civil unrest, military operations, or nuclear contamination
Any critical illness for which treatment, advice, or symptoms existed before the start of the policy period
Adding the ABSLI Critical Illness Rider is generally done at the time of purchasing an eligible ABSLI life insurance plan.
Choose a life insurance plan that allows the addition of the Critical Illness Rider.
Select a suitable critical illness cover amount based on your financial needs and healthcare concerns.
Provide health-related details and complete medical examinations if required by ABSLI.
Once approved, the rider is added to the base policy and the critical illness cover becomes active according to the rider terms.
To claim the ABSLI Critical Illness Rider benefit, the policyholder should follow the insurer’s claim process.
Notify the insurer as soon as a covered critical illness is diagnosed.
Complete the required claim form and provide the necessary policy and personal details.
Documents generally required include:
Duly filled claim form
Policy details
Identity proof
Diagnostic and medical reports
Hospital records and doctor’s certificates
Any additional documents requested by ABSLI
The insurer reviews the claim documents and verifies whether the illness meets the rider conditions. Once approved, the eligible lump sum benefit is paid.

Varun has spent years in the insurance space, but what drives him isn't policies or premiums — it's the conversations he's had with real people. A young father in Pune wondering if his salary is enough. A newly married couple in Jaipur putting off "the insurance talk" for later. A mother in Chennai who never knew her husband was underinsured until it was too late.
These stories stay with him.
As Head of Term Insurance at Policybazaar, Varun knows the numbers well — 52.4% of Indians are aware of term insurance, yet only 9.6% own it. And 87% of families don't realise they're leaving their loved ones with far less protection than they actually need. But behind every statistic, he sees a family that just needed someone to sit with them, explain it simply, and help them take that one step.
That's exactly what Policybazaar's term insurance is built to do.
In his words, "Most people aren't avoiding protection — they're just waiting for someone to make it easy. That's what we're here for."
