      What are Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) that leads to inflammation in the liver. It spreads through coming in direct contact with infected body fluids, including saliva, blood, semen or vaginal discharge. However, it can also be passed on from a pregnant mother to her newborn baby at birth.

The hepatitis B infection can either be acute or chronic. While acute hepatitis B, lasting for less than six months, goes away on its own, chronic hepatitis B can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cancer or liver failure. Besides, there is no cure for hepatitis B, but it can be treated with medicines. Moreover, the disease can be prevented with a hepatitis B vaccine.

      Symptoms of Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B symptoms usually appear 1 to 6 months after being infected with the HBV virus. Take a look at some of the most common symptoms of hepatitis B below:

      • Abdomen pain
      • Fatigue
      • Vomiting
      • Jaundice
      • Dark urine
      • Fever
      • Joint pain
      • Loss of appetite
      • Nausea
      • Weakness
      • Upset stomach

Who Should Buy Health Insurance for Hepatitis B?

Everyone should buy health insurance for hepatitis B. However, the following people are at a greater risk of Hepatitis B infection:

      • People living with a person with chronic hepatitis B infection
      • Infants born to an HBV-infected mother
      • People undergoing dialysis
      • People suffering from HIV or hepatitis C
      • People having unprotected sex or sex with multiple partners
      • Men having sex with other men
      • People undergoing therapies or medicines that weaken the immune system, like chemotherapy
      • Healthcare and emergency workers who come in direct contact with human blood
      • People who share needles to inject drugs into their veins

Benefits of Buying Health Insurance for Hepatitis B in India

Here are the key benefits of buying health insurance for hepatitis B:

      1. High Incidence of Hepatitis B in India

India reports the second-highest number of hepatitis B cases in the world. As per the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Hepatitis Report 2024, 2.98 crore cases of hepatitis B were reported in India in 2022. Moreover, more than 2700 people have died due to hepatitis B in the last 5 years. By buying a mediclaim policy, patients can afford to get the best treatment for hepatitis B without worrying about paying the bills.

      2. Costly Treatments for Chronic Hepatitis B

People diagnosed with acute hepatitis B mostly recover on their own. However, those suffering from chronic hepatitis B are at risk of developing liver cirrhosis or liver cancer or may need a liver transplant, which can be quite expensive. According to the Indian Cancer Surgery Site, liver cancer treatment can range from ₹2.25 lakh to 6.25 lakh across major Indian cities. A cancer insurance policy can help patients pay for their treatment without compromising on its quality.
