What Is the Nikshay Poshan Yojana?

Nikshay Poshan Yojana was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in April 2018 under the National TB Elimination Programme. The word “Nikshay” means ending TB, while “Poshan” refers to nutrition.

Under this scheme, all registered TB patients receive ₹1,000 per month as nutritional support during their treatment period. The amount is transferred directly to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the patient through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

Why Was Nikshay Poshan Yojana Introduced?

India has one of the highest TB burdens globally. Many TB patients belong to economically weaker sections and struggle to afford nutritious food during treatment. Poor nutrition weakens immunity, delays recovery, and increases the risk of treatment discontinuation.

      The scheme was introduced to:

      • Provide nutritional support to TB patients
      • Improve treatment success rates
      • Reduce treatment interruption and drug resistance
      • Support financially vulnerable patients during recovery

      Benefits Under Nikshay Poshan Yojana

      • ₹1,000 monthly nutritional assistance during TB treatment
      • Direct bank transfer through DBT for transparency
      • Support available for patients treated in both public and private hospitals
      • Additional nutritional support for underweight TB patients with BMI below 18.5
      • Encourages patients to complete the full TB treatment course

Who Is Eligible for Nikshay Poshan Yojana?

The eligibility criteria for the scheme are simple and broad:

      • The patient must be an Indian citizen
      • The patient should be diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB)
      • The patient must be registered on the NIKSHAY portal
      • Patients receiving treatment in both government and private healthcare facilities are eligible
      • Existing TB patients currently undergoing treatment can also avail benefits

If the patient does not have a bank account, a family member’s account can be used with a self-attested consent letter.

Documents Required for Nikshay Poshan Yojana

Patients need the following documents to register for the scheme:

      • Aadhaar Card
      • Active mobile number
      • Aadhaar-linked bank account details or bank passbook
      • TB diagnosis and treatment details

How to Register for Nikshay Poshan Yojana?

Patients can register for the scheme by following these steps:

Step 1: Visit the nearest government health centre or TB clinic

Step 2: Inform the healthcare provider about the TB diagnosis

Step 3: The health worker registers the patient on the NIKSHAY portal

Step 4: Submit Aadhaar-linked bank account details

Step 5: After PFMS verification, monthly DBT payments begin

For support or queries, patients can contact the helpline number 1800116666 or email helpdesk.nikshay@rntcp.org.

What Is the Nikshay Mitra Initiative?

Nikshay Mitra is a community support initiative launched under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan on 9 September 2022. Through this initiative, individuals, NGOs, institutions, and organisations can adopt TB patients and provide nutritional, emotional, and social support during treatment.

      Support may include:

      • Nutritional food baskets
      • Protein supplements
      • Additional financial assistance
      • Emotional and social support

      Impact of Nikshay Poshan Yojana

The scheme has significantly supported TB patients across India:

      • ₹3,202 crore has been disbursed through DBT transfers
      • More than 1.13 crore beneficiaries have received support
      • Around 25 lakh TB patients receive benefits every year
      • The scheme supports treatment adherence and better recovery outcomes

      Challenges in the Scheme

Despite its benefits, some implementation challenges still exist:

      • Lack of awareness among rural and low-income patients
      • Delays in NIKSHAY portal registration and DBT processing
      • Limited awareness about using family member bank accounts
      • Need for wider nutritional support for family contacts of TB patients

Why Nikshay Poshan Yojana Is Important?

TB mainly affects economically vulnerable populations such as migrant workers, labourers, and low-income families. The scheme helps reduce the financial burden of nutrition during treatment and improves recovery rates by ensuring patients receive proper dietary support along with medicines.

By combining medical treatment with nutritional assistance, Nikshay Poshan Yojana plays a key role in India’s mission to eliminate TB.
