What Is the Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG)?

The Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG) was introduced by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2011. Earlier known as SABLA or Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (RGSEAG), the scheme was designed to address nutritional deficiencies, anaemia, poor health awareness, and educational gaps among adolescent girls.

The scheme was later integrated under Mission POSHAN 2.0 to strengthen nutritional outcomes and support adolescent girls through a lifecycle-based approach.

Why Was the SAG Scheme Introduced?

India faces high levels of malnutrition and anaemia among adolescent girls. Many girls from economically weaker backgrounds lack access to proper nutrition, healthcare, education, and hygiene awareness.

      The scheme was introduced to:

      • Improve the nutritional status of adolescent girls
      • Reduce anaemia and health-related deficiencies
      • Promote health awareness and hygiene practices
      • Support out-of-school girls through education and skill development
      • Encourage self-development and empowerment among adolescent girls

Who Is Eligible for the SAG Scheme?

      The scheme mainly targets:

      • Out-of-school adolescent girls aged 11 to 14 years
      • Girls registered at Anganwadi Centres (AWCs)
      • Adolescent girls belonging to economically vulnerable communities

The scheme is implemented through Anganwadi Centres under the ICDS programme by state and UT governments.

Benefits Provided Under the SAG Scheme

The Scheme for Adolescent Girls includes both nutrition and non-nutrition support services.

      Nutrition Support

      • Supplementary nutrition for 300 days in a year
      • 600 calories with 18–20 grams of protein daily
      • Micronutrient-rich nutritional support
      • Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation

      Non-Nutrition Support

      • Health check-ups and BMI monitoring
      • Life skills education and counselling
      • Awareness about menstrual hygiene and reproductive health
      • Vocational training and skill development
      • Guidance about public services such as banks, PHCs, and police stations
      • Support for mainstreaming girls back into formal education

      What Is Kishori Diwas?

Kishori Diwas is organised once every three months at Anganwadi Centres. During this event, adolescent girls undergo general health check-ups, nutrition assessments, and awareness sessions.

The programme also educates parents and communities about adolescent health, hygiene, nutrition, and girl empowerment.

What Is the Kishori Health Card?

The Kishori Health Card is maintained at Anganwadi Centres to track the health status of adolescent girls under the SAG scheme.

      The card records:

      • Height and weight measurements
      • BMI details
      • Health check-up records
      • Nutrition and supplementation details
      • Services provided under the scheme

      What Is Kishori Samooh?

Kishori Samooh is a group formed at Anganwadi Centres consisting of 15 to 25 adolescent girls. The group encourages peer learning, awareness, and leadership development.

Three girls are selected as leaders:

      • Sakhi – Group leader
      • Sahelis – Assistant peer leaders

These peer leaders help educate and support other girls regarding nutrition, hygiene, health, and education.

How Is the SAG Scheme Funded?

The funding for the scheme is shared between the Central and State Governments.

      • Nutrition costs are generally shared in a 50:50 ratio
      • For northeastern states, funding ratios are higher for central support
      • Union Territories without legislatures receive 100% central funding

      SAG Under POSHAN 2.0

In 2021, the Scheme for Adolescent Girls was merged under Mission POSHAN 2.0 along with Anganwadi Services and Poshan Abhiyaan.

The integration aims to improve nutritional outcomes through:

      • Nutrition support for adolescent girls
      • Early childhood care and education
      • Strengthening Anganwadi infrastructure
      • Lifecycle-based nutrition interventions

Why Is the SAG Scheme Important?

Adolescence is a critical stage for physical and mental development. Poor nutrition and lack of healthcare during this phase can negatively impact future maternal health, child health, and overall quality of life.

The SAG scheme helps break the cycle of malnutrition and gender disadvantage by supporting adolescent girls with nutrition, health awareness, life skills, and education support.
