It is a legal obligation to carry a valid RC under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to ply on Indian roads and failing to do so can result in a traffic challan. There are two methods to obtain a registration certificate in Assam. Generally, the dealer applies for the registration of a vehicle on your behalf. However, you can follow the steps mentioned below if you are applying for an RC on your own through the RTO:
Step 1: Fill out Form 20 to apply for a vehicle registration certificate and submit it to the RTO office within 7 days from the date of purchase.

Step 1: Go to the Parivahan Sewa website
Step 2: Click on the 'Online Services' option
Step 3: Choose 'Vehicle Related Services' from the drop-down menu and select 'Assam' from the states dropdown list
Step 4: Click the 'Proceed' button once you have selected your RTO
Step 5: Select 'Know Your Application Status' and submit all the required details

You can use the following steps to check RC status through Policybazaar.com:
Step 1: Search for the vehicle RC status page on the Policybazaar Insurance Brokers Private Limited website.
Step 2: Fill in the registration number of your vehicle and click on 'View RC Status'.
Step 3: The details of your RC will be visible on the screen.
Note- In some cases, you may be asked to fill in your vehicle details, such as the make, model, year of registration, etc., to fetch the RC status.
You can download the RC for your vehicle in Assam through the Parvahan Sewa portal.
Step 1: Select the 'Vehicle Related Services' option from the homepage.
Step 2: Fill out all the required details and log in.
Step 3: Select the 'Download Document' option and then choose 'RC Print'.
Step 4: Once you have verified the details and completed the OTP verification, you can download your vehicle registration certificate.
If you are buying a used vehicle, the first step should be to get it transferred to your name. Once you have applied for the same, it is important to check the RC transfer status. You can follow the steps listed below to check RC transfer status in Assam:
Step 1: Visit the Parivahan Sewa portal
Step 2: Under the 'Online Services Section', select the link given for 'Vehicle Related Services'
Step 3: Select the regional transport authority and the state where your vehicle is registered
Step 4: Under the 'Status' tab, click on the option given for 'Know Your Application Status'
Step 5: Input the application number and captcha code in the right format
Step 6: Select 'Submit' and check the RC transfer status.

The cost of RC renewal in Assam usually ranges from ₹500 to ₹3,000.
In order to download RC from the mParivahan app, click on the option for 'My Virtual RC' on the homepage. You need to enter the registration number of your car and the last five digits of its chassis number. Now, click on 'Add My Vehicle(s)' to access and download it online.
