A vehicle RC is an important document in Himachal Pradesh and all over the nation as it verifies the registration status and ownership of your vehicle. It is necessary to carry your RC at all times for the following reasons:
Indian Motor Laws: The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 obligates all vehicle owners to carry the vehicle RC to legally ply on the Indian roads. If you fail to comply with this law, you may have to pay a huge fine.
Proof of Ownership: The name and other details, such as address of the owner is printed on the RC, which proves the ownership of that specific vehicle.
To Purchase a Car Insurance Policy: As it acts as proof of legal registration and vehicle ownership, it is a mandatory document to buy a motor insurance policy.
A registration certificate contains the following essential details about your vehicle:

These are the documents to apply for an RC in Himachal Pradesh:

A temporary vehicle RC is provided when you buy a new car, which is valid for 30 days. You must submit an application form for permanent registration during that period to get your vehicle's RC:
Step 1: Go to your RTO office or visit the Parivahan Sewa portal (online).
Step 2: Submit the documents and a duly filled RC application form, Form 20.
Step 3: Take your car for inspection at the RTO.
Step 4: Pay the registration fee for your vehicle*.
Note: The registration fee varies for different vehicle types, and it ranges from Rs. 50 to Rs. 5,000.
There are various ways to check RC status online in Himachal Pradesh. You can do the same through Parivaha Sewa and Policybazaar.com. Follow the steps as described below:
Follow these simple steps to check the Himachal Pradesh RC status from Parivahan Sewa:
Step 1: Visit the official portal, Parivahan Sewa.
Step 2: On the homepage, tap on the option for 'Online Services'.
Step 3: Then, select 'Vehicle Related Services'.
Step 4: From the list of states, choose 'Himachal Pradesh'.
Step 5: Click 'Proceed' after selecting your RTO.
Step 6: Under 'Status', tap 'Know Your Application Status'.
Step 7: Enter application number.
Step 8: Click 'Submit.'
Step 9: Check your vehicle's registration certificate details.
The NextGen mParivahan app currently does not have an option to check RC status. But you can view your vehicle RC online once it is issued, using your vehicle details, such as the vehicle registration number, the last five digits of the chassis and the engine number. The vehicle documents added on this app are valid and legal.
You can get your vehicle RC online via the Policybazaar.com website using the following steps:
Step 1: Go to Policybazaar.com's 'Check Vehicle RC Status' page.
Step 2: Enter the registration number of your vehicle.
Step 3: Tap the option for 'View RC Status'.
Step 4: Check your RC details.
Note: On the 'Check Vehicle RC Status' page, some users might need to add more information. The details can be fuel type, model, etc.
To download the RC, you must first follow all the steps mentioned below:
Go to Pariwahan Sewa website and select 'Vehicle Related Services'.
Choose your state and click on proceed.
Tap on the 'Download Document' option and click 'RC Print'.
Enter details and complete OTP verification. Your vehicle RC will be downloaded.
In case you have lost your RC, you can get a duplicate RC in Himachal Pradesh from the Parivahan Sewa website, following the steps below:
Step 1: Open the official Parivahan Sewa website.
Step 2: Tap 'Vehicle Related Services' under the 'Online Services' tab.
Step 3: Choose 'Himachal Pradesh' from the list and select the RTO.
Step 4: Click on the 'Application for Duplicate RC' link.
Step 5: Enter the last five digits of the chassis number and vehicle registration number.
Step 6: Tap 'Verify Details'.
Step 7: Complete the verification process either using your Aadhaar or OTP verification.
Step 8: Provide a reason why you want a duplicate RC.
Step 9: Choose your preferred payment mode and pay through that.
You must upload these documents after you pay the duplicate vehicle RC application fee:
PAN card copy/Form 60 and Form 61, if applicable
Chassis and engine number in a pencil print
Signature of vehicle owner
An affidavit that states an RC is stolen/lost and not impounded
Application form in Form 26
Police certificate, if stolen/lost
PUCC
Valid insurance copy

Tax clearance issued by the Accounts Department for commercial vehicles

After completing all the above-mentioned steps, you must book an appointment at the RTO. Take your vehicle for inspection on the scheduled day.
When you buy a used car, either you or the seller is required to transfer the ownership to your name. To check the RC transfer status, you can follow the steps mentioned below:
Go to Pariwahan Sewa website, and choose 'Vehicle Related Services'.
Select Himachal Pradesh under the states dropdown and click on proceed.
Click on 'Know Your Application Status' from the status tab.
Enter your application number and press 'Submit.'
Check the RC transfer status.
To download the vehicle RC online in Himachal Pradesh, visit the 'Print Registration Certificate' page on the Parivahan Sewa portal. Enter the required vehicle details and select 'Validate Information'. Your vehicle RC will appear on the page. Choose the option to download/print your RC online.
Visit the 'Vehicle Related Services' page of the Parivahan Sewa portal. Select your state and RTO. Enter the details required in 'Know Your Application Status'. Click 'Submit' to check your vehicle RC status in Himachal Pradesh.
You can get the registration certificate of your vehicle on your mobile through the mParivahan app. Click 'My Virtual RC', enter vehicle details, and tap 'Add My Vehicle(s)'. The RC for your vehicle will appear in the section for 'My Virtual RC(s)'.
Visit the 'Print Registration Certificate' on the Parivahan portal. Enter the last five digits of your car's registration number and the last five digits of the chassis number. Once you submit the information, you can print your vehicle RC online.
You must visit the RTO or Parivahan Sewa website to register your car in Himachal Pradesh. Submit the application form, required documents, and then book an appointment at the RTO. Take your vehicle to the RTO for inspection on the scheduled date.

Log in to the app or visit the 'Registration of Vehicles' page of the DigiLocker. Search for 'Transport Department, Himachal Pradesh', click on the option displayed, and then tap 'Registration of Vehicles'. Now, enter the details to log in and download your vehicle RC in DigiLocker.
Form 26 is required to get the duplicate RC in Himachal Pradesh. The other required documents include proof of age and address, a valid insurance copy, etc.
No, the registration for vehicles older than 15 years is not renewed in Himachal Pradesh. The car will be scrapped instead.
