India to End Boarding Pass Stamping at Airport Immigration from 1 September

Starting 1 September 2026, travellers departing from international Indian airports will no longer need to get their boarding passes physically stamped at immigration counters. The Bureau of Immigration (BoI), announced the update as part of the ongoing effort to digitise airport procedures and speed up departure times.

Under the new guidelines, passengers can present an electronic boarding pass on their smartphone or continue using a printed paper pass. However, officers will no longer apply ink stamps to either format.

What are the Key Changes for International Passengers?

The new procedure, as per the Ministry of Home Affairs will apply across all international airports in India. It will introduce several practical changes for passengers departing for abroad:

Digital Boarding Passes: Passengers can show an electronic boarding pass on their mobile/smartphone alongside their passport when passing through immigration counters.
Paper Passes Still Accepted: Travellers who prefer physical documents can still use printed boarding passes. However, they will no longer receive a physical stamp.
Automated E-Gates under FTI-TTP: Passengers who have enrolled in India's Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme can scan e-boarding passes directly at automated gates.
Fewer Paperwork Errors: Eliminating the physical stamp removes several cases like misplaced or smudged ink obscuring barcodes and boarding details. This previously caused scanning issues for airline staff at departure gates.

Reason for the Policy Update

The Bureau of Immigration (BoI) introduced the change after finding that physical stamping created unnecessary delays and paper clutter for passengers during peak travel hours. In addition, airlines also reported frequent difficulty reading paper boarding passes when ink stamps were placed over printed passenger details or barcodes.

Authorities have informed airport operators, airline staff, and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to ensure a smooth transition across all airport terminals. The government is also testing a separate pilot project to further streamline passport entry and exit formalities for Indian citizens.
