Heading to Kenya? Don’t Forget to Buy USD 50,000 Coverage Travel Health Insurance

Kenya has introduced a mandatory travel health insurance requirement for all foreign visitors, setting a minimum coverage of USD 50,000. As per the Social Health Insurance Act of 2023, all non-Kenyan nationals who wish to enter and remain in Kenya for less than 12 months must have a valid travel health insurance. This includes tourists, business travellers, and transit passengers. The plan should meet conditions established by the Health Cabinet Secretary.

Travel Health Insurance for Kenya: Coverage Specifics

As per the notice published in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette, Kenya’s Ministry of Health prescribes a cumulative travel medical insurance coverage limit of USD 50,000. This coverage amount must include the prescribed benefits mentioned in the table below:

Coverage Minimum Requirement
Emergency Medical Expenses USD 20,000
Emergency Medical Transportation USD 25,000
Prescribed Medication USD 300
Mental Healthcare USD 1,000
Repatriation of Mortal Remains USD 5,000

Application Process and Foreign Policies

Complying with the travel insurance mandate is essential for Kenya's entry verification systems. All foreign visitors are expected to present proof of insurance prior to departure or upon arrival in the country.

  • Visitors buying travel insurance from their home country should ensure it satisfies the required USD 50,000 limit and covers all five sub-categories.
  • Applicants for Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) must upload proof of their valid travel insurance policy to the official portal as part of the visa-free screening process.
  • Visitors who arrive without any policy can still buy a Kenyan travel health insurance plan from a licensed local insurer. These are available at the designated airport and border checkpoints.
  • Policy should cover the entire duration of the visit. This includes single-trip plans for short stays to international medical plans for longer stays up to one year.

The Kenyan government has introduced the travel insurance mandate to address gaps in its Universal Health Coverage framework. As per Kenya’s tourism officials, emergency responses such as medical evacuations from remote safari reserves or mountain regions have posed significant stress on tourists. These emergency services involve substantial costs that foreign tourists were previously unable to cover locally.

By adding mandatory insurance requirement, authorities aim to improve emergency medical care and guarantee prompt hospital admissions for injured visitors. The move will also protect Kenyan healthcare providers from unpaid medical bills.
