What Has Changed for Indians Travelleling to Nepal?

For years, Indian tourists visiting Nepal had to carry thick stacks of ₹100 notes because larger Indian bills were not accepted. This rule was originally put in place after India changed its currency notes in 2016. Under this new rule, visitors no longer have to rely only on small change when paying for hotel stays, taxis, or local tours.

Important Guidelines to Follow

  • Keep to the Limit: You can carry any combination of allowed notes, but the total amount must not go over ₹25,000 per individual.
  • Check the Note Type: Only ₹500 notes printed after November 2016 are valid. Older, withdrawn notes are strictly illegal.
  • Direct Routes Only: Nepalese citizens bringing Indian cash into Nepal must be travelling directly from India. Bringing Indian currency from a third country is not allowed.
  • Digital Pay Available: Alongside carrying cash, travellers can also use Indian UPI apps to scan QR codes and pay directly at participating shops and restaurants in Nepal.

Smoother Payment for Indian Tourists

India is among Nepal's top source of international visitors. Thousands of Indians visit Nepal every month for holidays, trekking, and pilgrimage. By allowing higher-value Indian banknotes, tourists can easily carry cash and helps local businesses accept payments without fuss.
