Trip to Bhutan Gets Expensive for Indians from July 2020

A trip to Bhutan will become costly for Indians as they will have to pay a sustainable development fee of Rs 1200 per day. This additional fee will be levied on tourists arriving from India, starting July 2020.

The lower house of Bhutan on Monday had passed tourism legislation on imposing sustainable development fee on Indian tourists arriving in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

The fee has been levied to curb the influx of Indian tourists visiting Bhutan which had risen by 10 per cent in 2018. The Bhutanese Government fear adverse effect on the environment and ecology of the country if the large numbers of tourists continue to arrive in Bhutan.

Besides Indians, the Bhutanese Government will also charge this sustainable development fee from tourists arriving in Bhutan from Maldives and Bangladesh.

Moreover, tourists from these three countries may also have to pay a nominal fee for the development of tourism infrastructure and facilities. However, the National Assembly of Bhutan is still discussing the Tourism Levy and Exemption Bill of Bhutan 2020 which imposes this fee. The bill also states additional provisions for tourists arriving in Bhutan from India.

Currently, tourists arriving from India, Bangladesh and Maldives do not have to pay any fee or obtain a visa to visit Bhutan.
